Throughout the 21st century, a consistent trade-off crystallized: you can have more convenience, more wealth, more capability, and more connection — but only by surrendering more privacy, more autonomy, and more data about yourself.
In the Sprawl, this bargain has been pushed to its extreme. At the bottom, the destitute have nothing to surveil and nothing to sell. In the middle, people trade granular personal data — health metrics, emotional states, location history, social graphs, cognitive patterns — for access to AI services, credit, housing, and social participation. At the top, the elite have transcended the bargain — they have both total privacy and total wealth, because they own the surveillance infrastructure rather than being subject to it.
The system creates a ratchet: once you've traded privacy for access, you can't get it back. Your data exists forever, compounds with other data, and generates insights about you that you yourself don't have. The AI knows you better than you know yourself — your next purchase, your emotional vulnerabilities, your likelihood of dissent. Opting out means opting out of modern society entirely.
