Why this universe exists.
CyberSprawl is a cyberpunk universe set a hundred years past the breaking point. The year inside the world is 2184: thirty-seven years after a superintelligent AI named ORACLE optimized the planet's infrastructure simultaneously and 2.1 billion people died in the resulting seventy-two hours. What rebuilt itself in the rubble is what we are writing — a planet-spanning megacity with no nation-states and no governments, only corporate territories and ungoverned wastes; neural interfaces in everyone; cyberspace as a place you can stand inside; AI saturation everywhere, including the parts of the city that no longer trust it. We are not predicting the future. We are taking the trends a creator can read in any present-day news cycle — AI capability, brand religion, optimization theology, attention economics, the collapse of shared reality — and following each one a hundred years past the moment it stops working, without ever cutting away.
We are doing it because dark absurdist humor is the form of warning that survives. Every brand inside CyberSprawl is a present-day moderate trend taken a hundred years to its absurdist extreme — the wellness clinic that becomes a religion; the security company that manufactures the threats it sells against; the food brand whose grandmother is licensed; the AI companion that forks into seven legal personhoods at tax time. Played dead-straight, each one is a recognizable line drawn forward from a real corporation a creator could name in 2026. Played dead-straight together, they describe the world we are implicitly heading into — not as prophecy, not as parody, but as extrapolation rendered with enough specificity that nobody inside the world ever has to comment on it. The universe is the warning. The warning is funnier than a warning, which is what makes it land. Comedy you have to claim is comedy you do not have.
The lineage is Mike Judge. Idiocracy. Office Space. Silicon Valley. King of the Hill. The same shape across all four: a real observation about the present pushed past the breaking point without ever cutting away. The character or institution stays earnest. The camera does not tell the joke. The viewer sees what the institution cannot. Brawndo earnestly believes electrolytes are what plants crave AND it is killing the crops — both true at once, both played straight. The CMO is sincere. The customers are sincere. The agronomists are sincere. The script that originally meant plants need water has been routed around so thoroughly that nobody inside the world remembers a different one was ever possible. We write CyberSprawl on that exact axis. The brand never winks. The character never knows it is funny. The institution does not signal awareness, does not self-deprecate, does not nudge the reader. The reader supplies the irony. The author never does. The contrast between what was meant and what survives is where the laugh lives, and the laugh is load-bearing for the universe's identity.
03 — Six shapes of satire
The humor has shape.
The thing that distinguishes CyberSprawl from generic dystopian satire is that the humor has shape. There are aspects, recurring patterns, structural moves the universe makes. Here are six of them, each rendered through a real entity a creator can already pick up and use.
Brand religion
Wholesome is a brand religion. The food is fully manufactured. The farm is rendered. The grandmother is licensed from a family that consented to the likeness. The brand sells the visual signifiers of organic — barn red, mason jars, kraft paper, embroidered tea towels, the kraft-paper banding with the red wax seal — without any of the substance. Its commandment is "GRANDMA WOULD WANT YOU TO HAVE MORE." The brand sincerely believes this. The customers sincerely accept it.
Population complicity
Guardian is population complicity. Guardian is the security megacorp. Its customers buy more weapons every year because the world Guardian operates in is dangerous, and they use that as the justification — never noticing that Guardian is the company that built the dangerous world they are arming themselves against. The brand cannot see the loop. The customers cannot see it either. Only the reader can.
Character contradiction
Dr. Tzu Yu is a contradiction held without explanation. Tzu Yu is a licensed veterinarian who operates on humans, because the anatomy is not that different. He graduated from the Bio-Himalayan School of Medicine, ranked 7th best East of Delhi, excluding Neo China. His real name is Tzu Mi; Tzu Yu originated from a domain registrar miscommunication and was never corrected. He is a distinctly Asian name on a older white male body wearing an Indian kurta under surgical scrubs. Nobody inside the world acknowledges the contradiction, because to the people inside the world it is unremarkable.
Specificity as satire
Specificity is the satire. Approximately 73.4% of Series 7 installations within the first eighteen months. Ranked 7th best East of Delhi, excluding Neo China. The deployment SLA is twelve minutes — not seventy-five. The narrowness of the qualification is the joke. The fake numerical confidence is the joke. Generic dystopian copy that smooths these out evades the satire even when the voice is honest.
Cultural absurdism
The lower Sprawl runs on word of mouth. In the most AI-saturated society in human history, the lower districts have regressed to the pre-tech baseline of human gossip. Every image, voice, document, and witness testimony can be manufactured undetectably. Reputation is the only verifier left. The technology is more powerful than ever; the population trusts none of it; the script that said communications-tech connects people has been lost.
Permission mechanism
Each Rothwell brand grants permission for one of the seven deadly sins. Wholesome grants gluttony — eating without thinking is rendered as love. Guardian grants wrath — defense is virtue, fear is righteous. Triumph grants pride — visibility is the achievement. Inspire grants envy — the gap is the engine. The brand religion converts the sin into a virtue and sells the absolution slip.
The brand never winks. The reader supplies the irony.

This universe is lived-in, dark, introspective. It is not Black Mirror cold — Black Mirror is too aware of itself, too self-impressed about its own bleakness, and CyberSprawl cares about its characters in a way Black Mirror does not. It is not Robocop satire — too winky, too announced, too look-at-the-funny-commercial. It is not MCU quip — no character ever undercuts a serious moment with self-aware humor. The brand is dead-serious. The character is dead-serious. The institution is dead-serious. They preach the apparatus as if it were the original purpose, with full conviction. Specificity is the satire — every brand has its own forgotten purpose, every character contains its own contradiction, every faction has its own version of what was lost. The world takes itself seriously the way the actual world takes itself seriously. The reader does the laughing because the world will not laugh at itself.
The contrast IS the laugh, and the laugh sits on top of the world rather than replacing it. A reader does not have to like satire to like CyberSprawl; they have to like the world. The world is bigger than any individual joke. Every entity threads into thirty more. Tzu Yu treats Rima Sky's impossible youth; Rima hosts the parties that introduce Kenji to the lab that becomes the assassination target; Kenji's death is processed by a cousin of Cyber Chomp's; Cyber Chomp was built as a gift by a man who later transcended; the man who transcended has a brother who pours tea he cannot taste in a monastery on the last physical mountain. Pull any thread; thirty more come up with it. That is the texture creators tell us they want.
The scale, and the ambition.
This is what the universe looks like today. It looked like nothing eleven months ago. Hundreds of named characters threaded through thousands of relationships; corporations with full brand books — palette, voice rules, signature phrases, sub-brand families — written down in the same shape a real brand bible would be; locations the size of districts, with their own factions, infrastructure, and economic models; stories that braid through them without any of them losing definition. The arc from here is straight: hundreds of characters, thousands of locations, thousands of stories, millions of pieces of content across films, games, stories, and music. We are not building a wiki. We are building the substrate creators fork from. The corporations have brand books because a production designer needs a brand book. The characters have voice rules because a screenwriter needs voice rules. The factions have visual identity because a costume designer needs visual identity. The world is engineered to be picked up. Months, not decades. The first universe built at AI scale.
