The Half That Was Never Firewalled

Read the four products in order and they all point the same way. The Mesh Stability Assessment measures what a person emits. The Volatility Index scores emission amplitude on a scale of nothing to a hundred. The Psychohygiene panel sorts by emission risk. The Neural Firewall suppresses emission below the contagion threshold and leaves the feeling itself intact.

Forty thousand people can name a transmitter. Nobody has ever filed against a person for receiving, which means reception produces no claimant, no exposure, and no product. The panel that classifies Sera Vasquez Red has no field for the other direction at all — so a person sitting on that floor with their inbound gain wide open screened Green that morning and screens Green now. The Shared Wound is what grew in the half nobody closed: continuous unfiltered reception in a population no instrument looks for, certified stable on the strength of a form that only ever asked what they broadcast.

Six weeks of comprehensive response, four products, and one direction. The omission was not missed. It was priced.

The Model That Came Out Of It

Forty thousand people went to hospital and every one of them came home. That is the reason this incident, alone among the Sprawl's contagion events, has an open literature.

A civilizational-scale natural experiment with a survivable outcome can be measured for years without anybody's estate objecting, and it was. What the papers established is narrow and enormous: an interior state is not a private event but a transmission with a radius, and a dense networked room is the medium. The finding is uncontested and has never needed revising.

It is also the load-bearing term in something none of those researchers were writing toward. The Saturation Load measures a district's absorbed ambient stimulus each season, and a sealed model converts that figure into an expected count of overflow events — sudden lethal violence by people with no motive and no prior relationship to whoever they kill. The conversion needs a propagation term, because the unit being forecast is a room rather than a person. The annex cites these papers. A district that declined to forecast the radius, after this morning, would be negligent, and the people who built the model were right about that.

So the instrument assembled from an event in which everybody lived is now the instrument that accounts, in advance, for events in which somebody does not. Inside the forecast band a killing is a fulfilled expectation, and the file closes on a single page.

Sera Vasquez has not returned to work. Her classification is still Red. The model derived from the worst morning of her life is cited, by reference number, in the disposition of homicides that require no defendant, and nobody has told her, because there is no procedure under which anyone would.

The Grief Propagation Finding

The Sera Incident established that emotional states are physical phenomena with broadcast power. Fear travels. Grief, researchers in the grief-districts found, also travels — but more slowly, through social networks rather than CyberFiber trunk lines.

What the Culpability Market discovered, in practice before any researcher studied it, is that the physical experience of grief changes in the presence of named guilt. When a Confessor stands before a family and says I am responsible, something neurological shifts in the family's state. Non-licensed researchers in the grief-districts — unable to publish in corporate journals — found that families who completed the full show-trial showed measurable changes in stress markers and sleep quality in the three months following the session. The changes were real. The cause — a hired stranger performing false confession — was not.

This is the grief version of the Sera Incident's central finding: the nervous system cannot always distinguish between real and performed. Sera's fear arrived through a trunk line and her colleagues received it as their own. The Confessor's guilt arrives through a show-trial and the bereaved receive it as resolution. The mechanism is different. The fundamental architecture is the same.

The Sera Incident noted that the warmth tax now includes the risk that genuine human connection might propagate. The Culpability Market's inverse is also true: performed guilt propagates as genuine resolution, for forty-two minutes, for the price of the premium tier.
