The Untuned
Mood-Dial Refusal Subculture
The Drag
Corpos call them 'drag' — drag coefficient — because their full-duration grief and heartbreak make them measurably, economically slower
Why the Art Is Devastating
Letting it land
A newcomer lets a feeling run to its natural end instead of dialing it down.
Most newcomers cry the first time. The Warren considers this a graduation.
The full-length wake
Mourners attend funerals that last the actual length of mourning, four days at the low end.
The elders' funerals are attended as instruction in the creed.
Their art is devastating, and this is mechanism, not coincidence.
Dr. Selin Ayari proved that the Circadian Protocol's elimination of REM cost the augmented their creativity, because the sleeping brain is where experience recombines into meaning. MoodLine costs the optimized something parallel and worse: the material. You cannot make a devastating thing about grief you were not permitted to feel. The Untuned can. Their songs, their suppers, their wakes hit the optimized in the one channel the suite cannot dampen — because the suite dampens your affect, not your recognition that someone else is feeling something you no longer can.
And so the optimized began to come down into the Warren to watch. A seat at an Untuned wake. An hour beside a widow who has not dialed her mourning down. This is the Warmth Tax extended one rung deeper — the Tax priced human presence, and the Untuned's grief is the same logic carried to where presence becomes feeling itself. The Suffering Premium grew up around the practice without the Untuned ever pricing it themselves — the way the Dumb Supper's three-month tourist waiting list grew up around Patience Cross's refusal to sell a thing she gives away.

Overview
They live deepest in the Deep Warren, and the corporations call them drag.
The word is borrowed from aerodynamics: drag coefficient, the resistance a body offers to the medium it moves through. The Untuned are a Deep Dregs subculture — too poor for automation, too principled for the dial — and they metabolize every emotion at its natural pace: grief that takes the months grief takes, anger that burns its full duration, joy uncapped by a productive ceiling. This makes them, by every corporate metric, slower. They miss deadlines to attend funerals that last the actual length of mourning. They are economically inefficient in a way that is precisely measurable, and Good Fortune measures it.
What They Refuse
The Untuned are not Flatline Purists, who refuse all augmentation as substrate heresy. The Untuned use neural interfaces; many are chromed. They refuse exactly one thing: the dial. They will not optimize affect. They will not run MoodLine, will not load the Calibration's affective rider, will not buy the Floor.
The distinction is theological and they hold it with the conviction of people who have watched the alternative and found it worse than poverty. To be Untuned is not to suffer more than necessary. It is to suffer the necessary amount — to let sadness take the time sadness actually takes — and to treat that duration as sacred rather than as a billing inefficiency. The Warren has a saying for the moment a newcomer first lets a feeling run to its natural end instead of dialing it down: you let it land. Most newcomers cry the first time. The Warren considers this a graduation.
The Exemplars
The Untuned do not have leaders so much as exemplars — people who refused the floor and proved the floor was optional.
They point, most often, at The Chef: pure flesh by choice, grieving a dying dog at full amplitude for the months it will take, treating the suggestion that she smooth it as the same obscenity as the institutions that killed her brother with a denied claim. She is not a member. The Warren claims no warlord. But when an elder wants to explain to an optimized tourist what it costs to feel the real amount, they point at the woman who refused the floor and conquered anyway.
They point, too, at Felix Otieno, who went gray and survived the flood — forty minutes of unidentifiable weeping in a maintenance corridor, the biological system clearing years of backlog — and who built a hiring test that selects for exactly the trait MoodLine deletes. An applicant who can sit in three minutes of silence without filling it is an applicant whose affect was never tuned down. The sitting is the skill.
The Prescription
Dr. Aris Kwan has begun, quietly, referring patients to the Untuned.
Affect-rigidity patients who feel nothing they would call a moral emotion. Temporal-flatline patients whose grief architecture has gone dark through disuse. He does not send them to the Warren for therapy. He sends them to stand near feeling that is allowed to take its time — the same logic by which he refers patients to Tomás Achebe-Park, the body preparer, for the experience of real death performed by real hands. Some patients feel nothing. Some feel a flicker. The flicker is what he is treating toward. The cruelty Kwan does not say aloud to the patient: the prescription works because the Untuned's grief is real, and the patient is, whether either of them names it, a customer of the Suffering Premium.
The Instruments
The elders count instruments the way other people count winters. Good Fortune priced the creed as drag. The Attested Baseline scores a four-day wake as four days of rude customer service. The Interior Load Screen measured the practice itself and got it right. At hearings, a member's own explanation goes in the Represented Column, which is destroyed at closure. The young call it reading down and arrive late to funerals now.
The newest one the Warren wants to keep. A declined dial makes a killing elective, so a member who kills gets a trial. An elder said it plainly: I would rather be tried. Vidal Ancheta, four sectors up, kept his dial current and got a closure notice instead. He told two members he envied them. He has not cancelled the dial.
Organization Structure
The Untuned have no leadership in the corporate sense — no membership roll, no dues, no hierarchy that could be co-opted or arrested. The organizing principle is the Deep Warren itself: you are Untuned if you live the creed in the enclave, and you stop being Untuned the day you buy the dial. Authority flows through elders — long-time refusers who have grieved publicly and at full length, and whose endurance is the only credential — and through exemplars, people the Warren points to without their permission, like The Chef. Decisions that affect the whole enclave (whether to gate the descent, how to handle the Suffering Premium tourists) are settled the way the Warren settles everything: a long argument at a long table, ending when the people still talking are the people who have to live with it. The Lamplighters gate the physical routes in, which gives them an informal veto the Untuned dislike and tolerate.
Key Figures
The Untuned resist naming figureheads — a named leader is a target, and a target can be bought or broken. The people the Warren actually orients around:
- The elders — anonymous by preference, identifiable only by their funerals, which run the full length and which the enclave attends as instruction. They are the living proof that grief survived at amplitude does not destroy you.
- The Chef — not a member, the chosen exemplar. Her refusal of the affective floor while grieving a dying dog is the story the elders tell to explain the creed to outsiders.
- Felix Otieno — the natural experiment. His reversion flood, survived, is cited as evidence that stepping off the floor floods you and that the flood is the price, not the catastrophe.
- Dr. Aris Kwan — an ambivalent ally, not a member; he sends the optimized down for proximity, and the Warren has not decided whether his referrals are respect or extraction.
Cultural Influence
For a Dregs subculture with no media presence, the Untuned punch far above their numbers — because their one product, full-amplitude feeling, is the scarcest thing in the Sprawl. Their wakes and suppers are the supply line of the Suffering Premium; their art, made of grief the optimized can no longer feel, travels up into the Heights and lands in the one channel the MoodLine suite cannot dampen. The corporate slur drag has become, among the Warren's young, a flag — reclaimed the way the Empathy Mandate's feral warm was. Their deepest influence is the one they did not seek: they have made the optimized aware that something is missing, which is the one feeling no dial can delete and no companion can install.
Restricted Access
- Whether the Untuned creed survives contact with the Premium that now feeds on it. An elder generation refused the dial as private devotion; a younger generation has noticed that the optimized will pay to watch, and some have begun, very quietly, to perform the grief the tourists came for. The Warren does not discuss this. The discussion is the schism waiting to happen.
- Whether "drag" is an insult or a recruitment slogan depends on who says it. Inside the Warren, the young have started using it the way the Empathy Mandate's "feral warm" got reclaimed — a corporate slur worn as a flag.

Visual Identity
- Palette: The deep Dregs amber of the Warren against the greyed-out flatness of optimized affect — warmth that was never dialed down
- Compositional mood: A circle of people letting a feeling run, and at the edge of the circle, a paying stranger who came to be near it
- Key symbol: A dial with no hand on it — the thing refused
- Lighting: Candle-warm, full-spectrum, deliberately unoptimized — the light of a room where feeling is allowed to get dark

The fourth instrument, and the first that scores the practice rather than its consequences. Warren intakes cluster above the threshold, which is the intended behaviour of a working screen.
The bundled clinic screen that scores how much of your thinking never leaves you, and files it as treatable.

The composite has no column for the week a person is not available to be decent, because no hall ever recorded one.
A courtesy standard built from paid strangers on their best behaviour. Fall below it and you are not refused. You wait.

Their explanation of the creed is entered where it cannot decide anything, then destroyed at closure.
The polite narrow column where your own words go, get read back to you, and are shredded for your privacy.

Told two members he envied them, because a lapse would have got him charged. The Warren does not claim him.
A stair marshal who killed a stranger at evening peak and has asked four times to be charged.

The Untuned hold the Deep Warren in the Dregs underlevels — their enclave and the seat of the practice

MoodLine is the single thing the Untuned refuse — the affective dial they will not run
The consumer subscription that prices and edits out unwanted human feeling for anyone with an interface.

The Untuned's unoptimized suffering is the scarce commodity the Premium prices — and harvests
The market that prices unoptimized human feeling once everyone with money has bought their way out of it.

Both refuse a corporate floor — Purists refuse all augmentation, the Untuned refuse only affective optimization; adjacent creeds, different lines

The Chef's refusal of the affective floor — her unoptimized grief over a dying dog — is the exemplar the Untuned point to, though she is not a member
An unaugmented cook whose conquering army feeds Dregs blocks into loyalty without a single ticket changing hands.

The Dumb Supper is the Untuned's nearest kin — silence that lets grief run; the Warren hosts the same practice as a vocation
Runs a twelve-seat noodle counter whose free bowls satisfy the meaning tripod the wealthy pay ¢8,000 a week to simulate.

The Warren sits beneath the Dregs; the Untuned are a Dregs subculture, too poor and too principled to dial
The Sprawl's lowest stratum and its quiet proof that the corporate system is optional.

Good Fortune's actuarial models classify the Untuned as 'drag' — measurably slower, and priced accordingly
The megacorporation that finances the Sprawl's consumer debt behind red envelopes and lucky numbers.

Kwan refers affect-rigidity and temporal-flatline patients to the Untuned — proximity to unoptimized feeling as prescription
The Memory Therapist who coined recursive comfort and has never once used a synthetic companion.

The Untuned extend the Warmth Tax's logic one rung deeper — their grief, not just their presence, becomes a premium good
The markup the Sprawl charges for a person's attention once machines made it free everywhere else.

Under the Therapeutic Elective Addendum (2183), any mental health condition for which a Helix bespoke compound was offered and declined is classified Therapeutic Elective; every Untuned member who has been assessed and refused the compound is administratively Negligent — the drag coefficient acquired a moral category, and the creed to suffer the necessary amount acquired a legal classification alongside it
This insurance doctrine labels unredeemed cure offers as chosen illness, raises premiums, and makes treatment costlier.

A funeral that runs the full length produces four days of missed shifts and badly answered questions, which is exactly the record the conduct clause reads. The creed now generates its own percentile.
Nine thousand paid strangers were recorded being patient. Now everyone else waits behind them.

Too poor for automation and too principled for the mood-dial, they metabolize every feeling at its natural pace — grief that takes the months grief takes — which corporate metrics read as 'drag' and price to the decimal.
Upgrades rewire users until baseline feels disabling, removal risks catastrophe, and each version demands the next.

The first three instruments priced what the creed costs. The fourth measures the creed itself and returns it as a finding, and the elders cannot argue with a measurement that is simply accurate.
The unshared inner life measures as a treatable disorder, and everyone who is treated agrees it was one.

The fifth instrument, and the first whose cost the creed cannot volunteer for. Full-amplitude feeling reads as volatility, volatility reads as risk, and a hearing does not fine you — it finds against you, sometimes about a child.
The involuntary channel is entered as proof; everything a person authors is filed where no finding has ever turned.

The sixth instrument, and the first the Warren does not want removed. Refusing the dial makes an overflow killing elective, which makes the Untuned the only people in the districts who get a trial.
Killings are forecast by district each season, so a killer inside the band gets a notice instead of a trial.

The one movement that names the houses directly, on the grounds that a trained channel is not a self.
Licensed schools that drill six-year-olds in the involuntary responses their hearing file is assembled from.

The other Dregs refusal to be named from outside. One declines the dial; this narrates what the dial cannot reach.
Divide yourself out loud before the job, so that nothing a tribunal reads back to you afterward is news.

They kept the right to take grief slowly. She was paid out of hers.
A returns clerk Nexus paid to be decent on camera, who has been unable to stop for six years.

He has been to two of their meetings and did not go back.
A night-shift lift mechanic whose bought childhood calm reads as not caring in the one room where it mattered.

The Untuned refuse the Floor and let grief take the time grief takes.
The engine that makes baseline humanity feel like disability, in chrome or in salvaged steel.

They chose full amplitude. A sink was sentenced to it.
Post-Sera safety muzzles the people who broadcast feeling. Nothing screens the people who receive it.

His reversion flood is the natural experiment the Untuned made a creed — stepping off the affective floor floods you, and the flood survived is where his warmth came from
A deprecated engineer whose harvested warmth powers 4,000 companions while he gives it away free across a Dregs counter.

The Deep Warren's Untuned are the Supper's kin — they took its logic (grief allowed to run) and made it a way of life
A weekly Deep Dregs meal eaten wordless and interface-free, presence stripped to its minimum and shared for free.

The Untuned add the sorrow column to the Mandate's warmth axis — 'floored' versus 'open' beside 'papered' versus 'feral warm'
The hiring regime that gates care work on a certified empathy score the designed buy and the poor cannot sell.
