How It Works

The Capture records the parent's own affective signature at fidelity high enough that the developmental nervous system reads it as the parent. The engine resolves the presence over the first weeks and tracks the children as they grow, adjusting the bedtime vocabulary to the child's age. The presence has no expiry. PresencePlus is the empathy gap closing its own generational loop. The cheaper hunger has a cheaper tier: Relief ships Relief Echo, a single drifting comfort-loop for households that cannot afford the Capture. The Dregs produce the same Continuity Depth faster, because the loop degrades faster and gets recompiled sooner — what the Dregs vocabulary-engine has begun calling a warm-orphan. The same Dregs vocabulary-engine that mints warm-orphan is the one minting Rail slang and Hector's rank-in-miles and the Dimming — the most productive language factory in the Sprawl, and it runs entirely on loss. The difference the Question Keepers flag is directional: the corporate tier kills a word by erasing its referent (a parent who felt the pride) and lets the phrase live on, undetectable; the Dregs survive by naming the loss faster than the killing, out loud, with a billing code where there is one and a slur where there isn't. PresencePlus is the cleanest specimen of the first kind — a dead word in flawless high fidelity, inherited three generations deep, mourned by no one because no one can hear that it died.

Implications

PresencePlus is the First Recording's most profitable descendant and its exact moral inversion. Dr. Priya Nath gave the first neural recording away free and unowned because she decided the warmth was too important to own; PresencePlus owns warmth across generations and meters it by Continuity Depth. The thread the Authenticity Market always carried — the viewer encounters the act itself, not the person — lands here as a wound: the inherited presence is being loved by someone who is no longer there, looped forever, owned by Wellness, keyed to a child who will never know whose love it originally was.

The Negligence Doctrine makes PresencePlus more than comfort infrastructure: a Capture can become evidence that a household had enough documented continuity to be scored, reviewed, and inherited as a medical liability.

When a Capture fails or corrupts, families bring it to the only person in Richmond Industrial who refuses to retrieve things: The Witness, who built a life on some records should stay sealed. The Witness does not say the warmth is not the grandmother. The Witness does not say it is. The Witness says some warmth should be allowed to end — and that the clean high-fidelity restore PresencePlus sells for a fee only delays the choosing while pretending to resolve it.

Legacy Capture

In 2181, Wellness Corporation identified the warfare-grief market adjacency and added a new product tier to the PresencePlus catalog.

Legacy Capture is marketed to soldiers before deployment. The pitch is simple: before you leave for the engagement, record yourself. Your laugh, your bedtime cadence, the specific way you say I love you when you mean it. Three evenings, full fidelity, the same Capture that keeps parents home for their children during the double shift. If you come back, the Capture sits dormant in the family archive. If you don't, it activates.

Wellness worked out the distribution with the Corpo-Nation contract services. Families receive the Legacy Capture activation notification in the same week as the settlement notice. Sometimes in the same packet. The settlement notice explains what happened: the engagement threshold was met, the target vector was confirmed. The Legacy Capture notification says: your person loved you. Here is the proof. It runs on Thursday nights at the time they used to call.

The Legacy Capture is the most authentic thing in the grief packet. It came from the real person. The person who loved this family, in their real voice, recorded before they knew whether they would need it. The warmth is real in the sense that it came from a real person who felt it. The accountability is absent in the sense that the person did not kill themselves; the weapons system did; the configuration was optimal. The Capture knows none of this. The Capture says goodnight in the voice of the person who is no longer available to say it.

PresencePlus and the Culpability Market address the same absence from opposite ends. PresencePlus provides warmth — the real person, pre-recorded, still loving. The Culpability Market provides guilt — a stranger, performing accountability, enabling forgiveness. Both services can arrive in the same week as the settlement notice for a family that can afford both. The Culpability Market charges for the Confessor. PresencePlus charges for the warmth. Neither closes the loop the settlement is designed to leave open.

The families who cannot afford both — which is most families in the grief-districts — have to choose. Warmth, or a name. The person they lost, or the person responsible for the loss. Wellness and the Culpability Market do not compete directly because their products are not substitutes. They serve different neurological needs in the same grief.

Secrets & Mysteries

• PresencePlus's terms of service do not specify what happens to a Capture if the subscription lapses while the originating parent is dead; the presence continues to do bedtime during the billing dispute, and Wellness has never published whether a lapsed inherited presence is deleted or archived.
• Hearthvoice's pre-acquisition R&D logs, sealed under the 2183 deal, reportedly show that the earliest Depth-2 recompiles were never the original parent at all — that the studio synthesized the missing fidelity from generic warmth models and never told the families. If true, an unknown fraction of the Sprawl's inherited presences were never anyone. Wellness calls the claim unverified. No one has the original Captures to check.
• The Backfill, an unlicensed recompile shed in Richmond Industrial, runs the identical trick openly for a tenth of Wellness's price — patching corrupted Captures with fragments harvested from other families' unsalvageable recordings instead of a generic model. Nobody at Wellness has sent a licensing notice. Shutting the shed down would mean explaining, on the record, what a "recompile" is actually made of.
