Teodor Alcaraz
Drilled at six not to have one
He said it twice, out loud, in a bright room, and both times the clerk wrote it in the narrow column.
Overview
Teodor Alcaraz is twenty years old, keeps the lift column running on nights in the Stacks, and has never failed a screening in his life.
That last part was the point. In 2170 his mother read the framed fee schedule outside a storefront composure house off the Old Town market and bought the course she could afford: twelve weeks, no refund, one reflex. He was six. Six is when the work is cheap, which is why six is what the schedule is priced against.
The course delivered. Checkpoints, credit interviews, two hiring boards, a Guardian stop that went nowhere โ his channel stays flat and the flat has protected him every time.
In April 2184 a mediator in a Sector 2 hearing room read out the removal of his daughter, and his channel stayed flat then too.
The Hearing
The review was not a frame-up and the mediator was not a monster. The welfare report was thin but real: night rotation, a household recorded as unattended after dark, a two-year-old named Runa, and a father who had taken the night rate because the day rate would not cover the hearing fees the review itself had generated.
Teodor said he was sorry. He said it twice โ once when the finding was read and once at the door โ and the clerk transcribed both, read them back, and asked if that was right.
The finding cited the wide column: low demonstrated attachment. Pupil latency inside trained band. Respiration unchanged through the reading of the disposition. Skin conductance flat.
Every figure in it was correct. The channel really did not move. He was six years old when he was taught that it should not.

What He Does Now
He asked the clerk, on the way out, whether the represented column was kept. She told him no โ accurately, and not unkindly; she has been asked perhaps forty times and has never found a version that lands softly.
So he unfolded the notice on the corridor bench, took the pencil stub out from behind his ear, and wrote down what he had said, on the back, while he could still remember the wording.
He has eleven of those now. He keeps them in the coat. Twice somebody has offered to help him get them into a file โ a clinic intake worker, then a Line-Walker who saw him writing โ and both times he declined, because he understands exactly what the offer is worth and has no interest in being told again.
He has a certificate from a house that closed in 2178. On paper that is documented composure training, which makes him formally eligible for the discount clause that would let a mediator set his reading aside. He has never been granted it. In another sector, Maren Cott can identify a storefront curve off a strip-chart on sight, out of the forty-one that have crossed her desk, and has been granted the clause once in three years. She has never seen his file. He has never heard her name.
What He Will Not Say
He does not claim the instrument lied. Asked by the clinic worker whether the mediator had been unfair, he said the mediator read what was there.
He went to two Untuned meetings in the summer and did not go back. He agreed with most of it. What he could not get past is that their argument starts from the reading being wrong about a person, and his was not wrong about him โ his mother bought a thing, the thing worked, and it is still working.
He is not appealing. There is nothing to appeal: no procedural defect, no disputed figure, no clause available. The next review is scheduled for the spring, and he has already started composing what he will say, out loud, in a bright room, to be written in the narrow column and destroyed at closure.
He is getting better at the wording. He has the eleven previous drafts to work from.
The reading was accurate. He was drilled at six not to have one.
Asked whether the mediator had been unfair, he said the mediator read what was there.
He writes it on the back of the notice, because that is the only copy there will be.

The column where everything a subject authors is entered, weighed at nothing, and destroyed when the finding closes.

Level nine, and the lift column he keeps running on nights. Ninety thousand residents on foundations certified for twelve thousand, and one working lift bank.

Twenty years old, twelve weeks of storefront composure training bought for him at six, and a channel that reads flat at everything โ including the moment a mediator read out the removal of his daughter.
The involuntary channel is entered as proof; everything a person authors is filed where no finding has ever turned.
