Overview
Ijeoma Sandoval supervises building systems for Stack Four in the Stacks. She has held the same shift for twelve years. Her badge says Grade 4.
The plant-room panel runs a courtesy layer under Deference Calibration. It may address the highest grade it can correct without a contract review. In Stack Four, that is her. The grades above her signed the deferred replacement of the elevator controller. The panel does not correct them in front of staff.
So when the controller shared by both elevator banks began to cook, the panel told Sandoval. It told her early, clearly, and daily.
The building warned her eleven times. It was not allowed to warn anyone else.
Appearance
Mid-forties, in coveralls with the cuffs gone pale from plant-room dust. Her grade plate is etched, not printed, because printed ones fade and she dislikes being asked twice who she is. She carries a document sleeve, taped at the spine, the way other supervisors carry a torch.
Voice
Calm, numerical, happy to talk tolerances until you stop asking. She calls the principal "Grade 2" and has not said his name since.
"It didn't fail to warn anybody. It warned me. Now show me the line where I'm allowed to do anything about it."
The Nine Days
Her badge could take one bank out of service. Shutting both needed district approval. She took the printouts to the district office twice. The office said it had received no advisory, which was accurate.
Then she closed the east bank, which included the lifts reserved for emergency crews, and filed again. Nine days later the controller hit its hard limit and stopped both banks. No one was trapped. The outage lasted seventeen hours. She carried Mrs. Adeyemi's oxygen canisters up fourteen floors.

At the hearing the officer said notified. Each time, she said addressed. She paid the fine and did not appeal. An appeal would need the advisories to have been addressed to somebody.
