Iona Draskovic
Struck Engineer of Record
Would Not Guess
Ask her whether the finding was wrong and she will correct the question. She could not answer it. That is a different sentence.

Overview
Iona Draskovic reads a builder's drawing with a steel rule worn bright at one end. She taps each column twice. The builder waits with a bag of fittings and a hot pie. That is her fee.
For twenty-two years she was an engineer of record, her name on drawings in ink. Ironclad Industries liked it that way. Its site hoardings said Real Engineers Sign Their Work.
In spring 2184, at fifty-six, she was examined on a load case she signed in 2170. She passed the first question and most of the second. The third asked for the derivation without tables. She said she could not do it.
She would not guess. A confident wrong answer has passed people before.
The licence lapsed on the spot. Every later certificate that cited the 2170 case went with it. The span still stands on the Ironclad shoreline. An Ironclad crew load-tests it every spring. It passes every spring.

The Sheet
She went home and worked the six load combinations by hand. It took eleven days. She got them right on the ninth attempt. The sheet lives in her coat pocket and has no legal effect. She pats it the way other people check for keys.
She does not blame the Second Mind, which did her derivations lawfully for a whole career. The split was sound, she says; she was audited on the half she was not doing. The Competence Theater figures do not offend her. Calling her career theatre does.
One entry survives on her record: a four-credit fine for a late filing in 2176. The Unrecalled Finding keeps it there permanently. She calls it the last true thing on the page.
The Offers
Nine weeks after the strike, a reader from the Attendance Bar came down with a floor plan. The mediator's chair looked empty around minute twenty-two. Under the Occupancy Rule, the Vacancy Register would void the sitting on that alone. Fair fee, good odds.
She said the question had been fair. "I'm not having that undone by somebody's bladder."
The Recitation Houses have offered her a coaching stool three times, at four times her income. "I will not be paid to be the warning."
The Bench
She works a back bench in the Cathodics. Nothing she assesses can be filed. Builders listen anyway.
Ansel Karanja, who holds his ward compact's seat under the Forfeit Seat, hired her for twelve days to survey the Stacks. She measured the base slabs at 4.9 times design load and bound the report by hand. Neither of them can file it.
Appearance
Dark blue work coat. The licence tab was unpicked, not cut, leaving a rectangle of unfaded cloth. "The coat is fine." Reading glasses pushed into grey hair. Chalk dust on the left cuff only.
A Lamplighter apprentice once brought her a route drawing from Old Jin (Jin Nakamura). She sent it back: Not qualified to read this. She meant it as a compliment.
