The Lapse

A courtship at the House runs on one rule, stated to every incoming Correspondent on their first morning: a letter left unanswered inside seventy-two hours is declared lapsed. The Directress reads the lapsed party's name aloud at the week's Assembly, in front of the full cohort, before any private comfort is offered. There is no ambiguity to interpret afterward, no read receipt to reread for meaning. The word is said once, publicly, and the courtship is over.

Thirty-one Correspondents across eleven Seasons have withdrawn mid-term after their first Lapse notice, unable to continue. The House does not treat this as failure of the method. Ferro's founding note, still read to every incoming cohort, calls the departures "the tuition the House cannot refund and would not if it could" — proof, to her, that the difficulty on offer is real rather than staged.

The letters themselves leave no trace once a courtship ends. Every lapsed exchange is collected and pulped within the week into blank stock, and the next Season's Correspondents write their first letters on paper made from the courtships that did not survive the one before them.

What the House Will Not Sell

Wellness has approached the House three times since 2179, most recently offering a license to sell the Rehearsal method as a Connect Sovereign concierge tier. Ferro died in 2181; the trust she left behind has refused all three offers in writing, citing the founding condition that no interaction on the grounds may generate a record a third party could purchase. Two hundred thirty-three completions across a Sprawl of hundreds of millions is a number too small to register on any Wellness metric. It is also the only number Wellness has spent three licensing offers trying to acquire.

Ninety-two marriages have resulted from House introductions since 2171. Three have formally dissolved as of 2184.

A Correspondent's Record

Priya Okonkwo-Bell arrived for Season 9 in 2183 after three years on Wellness Connect produced nothing her family judged worth keeping. She rewrote her first reply to a Correspondent named Dashiell Renard six times, terrified of writing it badly, and missed the seventy-two-hour window on the seventh draft by four hours. The Directress read her name at Assembly before Priya had finished capping the pen. She cried for most of the following week and asked to leave twice.

She stayed, finished the Season paired with someone else, and returned the year after specifically to write to Renard again. They married in 2184. Neither has used a companion or a matching platform since arriving at the House, and neither owns a device that could tell anyone if that changed.

Sensory Details

• Sight: Cream stationery drying on a line strung between porch posts, a stack of pulped letter-stock waiting to be cut for the next Season, the Directress's ledger of names read at Assembly, kept in ink and never digitized.
• Sound: A fountain pen's specific scratch, the creak of the Assembly barn's doors, the particular silence after a lapsed name is read before anyone speaks again.
• Smell: Fog-damp hay and woodsmoke from the manor's hearths, ink and cotton-rag paper, the kitchen garden's rosemary hedge after rain.
• Touch: The raised grain of hand-pressed stationery, a wax seal cooling under a thumb, cold porch railings in valley fog at dawn.
• Temperature: Cool and damp most of the year, warmed only by hearth fires and the Assembly barn's lamps after dark.

• Wellness Connect — Made three licensing offers for the Rehearsal method; refused each time in writing, on the same founding condition that keeps the House's letters out of anyone's ledger.
• Dr. Aris Kwan — Interviews willing alumni off the grounds, the House's only tolerated clinical contact, and cannot publish what he finds because the sample selects for wealth as much as for method.
• The Authenticity Threshold — The House tests the Threshold's question from the human side, weighing effort against algorithm, and arrives at the same unanswerable question about whether origin matters to a bond that functions.
• The Empathy Gap — Alumni show almost none of Xu's markers, a result the House cannot claim credit for, since its own admissions criteria already filter for the exposure the Gap requires.
• The Veil — A currency fortress and a courtship academy, fifty kilometers of the same inland valley apart, arrived independently at the rule that nothing worth protecting should be written down twice.
• The Hidden — Shares hill country and a founding instinct: one town burns a year's meanings every autumn, the House pulps a year's failed letters into next Season's paper.
• The Slack Tide — The counter-case on the far coast: where a Season coaches a student for months into someone who can hold another's regard, the oyster shore sells that regard finished and by the tide, and both destroy every record of what passed between two people.

Restricted Access

Admission is decided by the Directress alone, on criteria the House has never published beyond "capacity for difficulty." Three families with tuition in hand have been declined outright since 2171, for reasons the House has never explained even to the families involved. Two of the three later enrolled a child successfully after a second application, years apart, with no stated change in circumstance. The House keeps a private list of the reasons. It has never left the estate.
