For four generations these vowels and turns kept households out of work and licensing. Now they are the one credential capital cannot make for itself. Arrears clear and teeth get fixed. Telling families to refuse is easiest for people who were never marked deficient.

Every lease is a training sample. The median tell lasts nineteen months after its first lease, and the supply cannot be restocked.
The test measures class, not people
The Assay certifies the absence of the machine register, and that register was fitted to the best-schooled prose in the archive. Fluent people fail and stigmatised speakers pass. It detects upbringing.
What it costs
Without a negative test, no unmarked document can be trusted, and every binding decision that needs a human signature loses its floor.
The case for the trade is made hardest by the households supplying it. For four generations these sounds cost them jobs and licences. Now a firm pays a Sump Row family by the season for the same sound. Arrears clear. Teeth get fixed.
The case against is the clock. The fastest way to teach a model a sound is to hand it thousands of certified examples under lease. The median tell survives nineteen months after its first lease. The supply came from company schools, and the schools have closed.
The test also fails upward. Dr. Priya Achebe submitted her ethics findings by hand. Her prose is precise and unhurried. She was schooled in exactly the prose the register was fitted to. The Assay declined to sign. Her findings stayed in the file.
Overview
Ynez Barquero sits at a compliance broker's desk and reads a list of ordinary words. In the second syllable she holds the vowel a half-beat long. The corporate register clips it. The broker records the reading for the season's lease.
"Your grandmother's vowel," the broker says, "is the most secure credential in the Sprawl." He checks the quarterly bulletin. "For now."
Her grandmother was corrected for that vowel at a company school in the 2130s. Ynez leases it four times a year. Firms buy it to make their attestations pass the Authorship Assay. The Assay cannot find a person on a page. It finds the machine, and certifies its absence. Its stamp reads NO MACHINE REGISTER DETECTED.
The Assay calls a certified marker a retention. Everyone outside the assay floor calls it a tell.
How It Came To This
The origin mark settled spoken attribution. It cost the Authenticity Tribunal its jurisdiction over speech. What the mark missed was the unmarked page: handwritten attestations, off-interface drafts, documents from thin districts.
Those pages mattered. Regulatory code 11.4(b) requires a human signature on any binding algorithmic decision. Licensed Human Oversight now assays its own attestations before filing.
The Tribunal had a hall, spare assessors and a pattern library. In 2176 it opened the assay floor and ran the library backwards. The machine register was fitted to the cleanest, best-schooled prose in the corporate archive. Fluency is what a machine does well. So fluency reads as machine.
The live register opened with 4,112 retentions. It holds 617 in 2184. When a model learns to produce a tell, the tell is struck and every lease written against it goes void.
How It Is Lived
Maya Fontaine took a rotation on the assay floor in 2183 and stayed. Her accuracy is the best in the hall. She calls a certifiable page one with a snag. Privately, she counts how many of the tells she signs are still live the next quarter.
Graduates of the Analog Schools trigger the Tribunal's pattern review at 41 percent. Two halls away, the assay floor reads the same deviation as proof of a person. Neither hall has been asked to reconcile the two.
Helix's Denaturing Ward keeps a bound ledger of 2,306 words convicted by tribunal, each with a docket number. The Assay's struck register lists tells the models learned, each with a date. Both are kept in ink.
Up the coast, the Hidden speaks a grammar built from dead words. It reassigns meanings every autumn and burns the record the same night. Its illegibility is renewable. The Barquero vowel is not.
Ynez has a niece with the same vowel. She has not decided what to tell her.
