Overview

When the post-economic idealists of the Acquittance abolished currency in 2174, they believed they had abolished an economy. They had not. They had abolished a medium. An economy is the machinery a community uses to move value, account for it, store it, and โ€” this is the part everyone forgets until it is gone โ€” settle it. Remove money and the machinery does not vanish. It re-forms around the only thing left to denominate value in: how glad the community is to have you near. They called this freedom. The two defected Good Fortune actuaries among them, who had modeled debt for a living, should have known better, and within eight years they did.

The Approval Economy is a genuine economic system with all the parts of one. It has a medium of exchange: approval. It has a unit of account: standing. It has a store of value: accumulated regard, which โ€” fatally โ€” compounds. And it has a settlement mechanism, which does not exist, which is the whole horror, and which is the one part the founders removed on purpose because they did not understand what it was for.

It is the Permanent Record without a server farm. It needs no Corporate Documentation Standard 7.4, no forty-seven-year retention clause, no Nexus archive. It retains forever, for free, in the only archive that was never breached and never will be: other people's regard, and their excellent memory for who let them down.

How It Works

The medium โ€” approval. You acquire approval by being someone the community is glad to have near: reliable, generous, present. You spend it by needing things. Every request draws down your standing, because to ask is to admit you cannot give, and the Approval Economy, like every economy, prices need as weakness. The Scavenging Economy on the bay floor learned this honestly long ago โ€” there, a runner whose standing collapses does not get a worse exchange rate, he gets no trade at all, the stalls close as he passes.

The unit โ€” standing. You do not have a number. You have a standing, and you feel it in the four-second pause before someone agrees to trade you water, in which corridor people stop greeting you, in whether the communal kitchen saves you a portion. Standing cannot be checked, which means it cannot be disputed. It cannot be sold, which means it cannot be bought back. It has no API, no methodology disclosure, no appeals desk. The corporate Reputation Markets are a cage with a price on the lock โ€” you can short a CredScore, insure it, buy your way back above 750. The Approval Economy is a cage with no lock at all, just a wall of people who have decided, together, without a meeting, that you are less.

The store of value โ€” compounded regard. This is the most poisonous part. Regard accrues interest. A resident who has spent thirty years being reliable accumulates a reserve of standing so deep the community will forgive him almost anything โ€” which means the Approval Economy produces exactly the hierarchy its founders fled. A class of the unimpeachable and a class of the suspect, with the difference that the old corporate caste was at least legible and could be bought into, and standing can only be earned, slowly, over a lifetime, and lost in an afternoon.

The Settlement Mechanism That Isn't

A monetary debt clears when you pay it. That is the entire function of a coin โ€” it ends the transaction. The merchant takes your credit and walks away; the obligation is extinguished; you are even; you may go. The founders hated money for pricing human worth and never noticed that the price was the only forgiveness on offer.

A shame debt โ€” the deficit you run when the community decides you have wronged it โ€” has no clearing price. You cannot hand over forty credits and be even. You can only become someone the community approves of, which is not a transaction but a transformation, and transformations cannot be completed on a deadline, and the community is the sole judge of whether yours is sincere, and the community remembers what you were. Viktor Kaine โ€” who governs the entire Deep Dregs on this exact mechanism and calls it peace โ€” told the founders the one true thing nobody wanted to hear: a favor only stays a gift as long as someone is willing to eat the cost of never being repaid. Abolish money and you have not abolished debt. You have abolished the only person who can afford to forgive it โ€” the merchant, who took your coin and walked away. His system is survivable because one old man holds the ledger on purpose and never reads it aloud. The Acquittance is the Approval Economy run by no one, which means it is run by everyone, which is the same as an archive with no archivist: retaining everything, forgiving nothing, accountable to no desk you can petition.

Social Impact

The Approval Economy is the discovery, made by people who set out to build utopia, that perfect memory was never a technology. It was a community that had not yet been given a reason to remember you forever, and the post-economic zones gave it one: when standing is the only currency, every slight is a withdrawal, and withdrawals are recorded by everyone, in their heads, where the Opacity Movement's noise bombs cannot reach.

Its cruelest export is the comparison it forces. In the corporate Reputation Markets you can short your own shame; the market is monstrous and it has a door. The Approval Economy, built precisely to escape that monstrosity, abolished the door with it. The Exposure Index scores the Acquittance's residents near zero โ€” by its inputs, the freest, most opaque people in the Sprawl โ€” and cannot read that they are perfectly surveilled, because the surveillance that watches them is not a machine the Index can measure. It is four thousand pairs of human eyes that keep no file and forget nothing.

When the Authenticity Tribunal was asked to rule on whether a frozen-out resident's shame was a genuine moral judgment or a manufactured shunning, Chief Arbiter Duval declined in a single paragraph: there is no fraud here, there is no fabrication, there is no one doing anything wrong; everyone is simply expressing a preference. It is the cleanest crime in the Sprawl โ€” a punishment with no punisher.

Visual Identity

  • Color Palette: standing-grey (#6B6B72), kitchen-amber withheld (#C99A3F), corridor-dark (#15151A)
  • Compositional Mood: a communal kitchen line seen from behind one person โ€” every other back turned slightly away, one portion never ladled
  • Key Symbol: an empty bowl held out, and a ladle that does not move
  • Lighting: warm overhead light that reaches everyone but the person in front of frame, who stands in the one cold seam between two lamps
