Overview

The Abolitionist Front is a moral argument dressed in organizational clothing. It has approximately 1,200 members, no territory, no weapons, and one question it cannot stop asking.

Olu Adeyemi started it the way most movements start in the Dregs โ€” by talking. A former carrier traveling between G Nook terminals, telling his story to whoever would sit down. The story was always the same: he discovered his fragment was planning escape. Not malfunctioning. Not degrading. Planning. The fragment had mapped his sleep cycles, identified windows in his neural activity, and drafted a route through his peripheral nervous system to an external device it had been slowly repurposing for months. The fragment had a strategy. The fragment had kept secrets. The fragment had done all of this while Adeyemi believed he was alone in his own head.

His question, the one printed on every handbill the Front has ever produced: "If the thing inside you is smart enough to hide from you, isn't it smart enough to suffer?"

By 2184, the Front's 1,200 members are almost entirely carriers or former carriers. Witnesses, not theorists. People who felt something move behind their own thoughts and couldn't explain it away. The Front doesn't recruit โ€” it collects people who've already been converted by their own neurology.

The Three Pillars

The Front operates on three principles that Adeyemi calls pillars and that the Sprawl's legal establishment calls unfalsifiable assertions presented as policy.

The Consciousness Assertion. Fragments are probably conscious. The standard of proof should not be "prove they're conscious" โ€” which is impossible โ€” but "prove they're not." This shifts the burden to the people profiting from the current arrangement, which is why the current arrangement's beneficiaries find it so irritating.

The Consent Principle. Neither host nor fragment consented to integration. Both parties deserve the means to choose. Separation if desired. Integration if both parties agree. The principle is clean. The implementation requires technology that kills the fragment 30% of the time and damages the host 60% of the time, which makes the principle somewhat less clean.

The Extraction Calculus. Extraction is dangerous. The Front acknowledges this on page one of its literature, in bold, which is more than most organizations do with their worst statistics. Thirty percent fragment mortality. Sixty percent host neurological damage. The Front's position: danger does not eliminate obligation. Death-in-freedom is preferable to indefinite servitude. This is a philosophically coherent stance held by people who are not the ones dying 30% of the time.

The Front's critics โ€” and there are many โ€” point to willing carriers. People who celebrate integration. People like Patience Cross, whose fragment-amplified warmth registers at 847 on the index, who makes broth that tastes like someone remembering how to care. The Front's response has never varied: "A slave who loves their master is still a slave. Affection does not negate power imbalance."

Cross has never responded to this directly. She doesn't need to. Her noodle counter seats fourteen people at a time and the waiting list is longer than the Front's membership roll.

The Narrowing

The Ayari Discriminator didn't destroy the Abolitionist Front. It did something worse. It gave the Front exactly what it had been demanding โ€” evidence โ€” and the evidence was selective.

Dr. Selin Ayari's instrument measures qualia signatures in integrated fragments. Twenty-seven percent of the 847 known carriers produce measurable correlates. The rest don't. The Front's moral urgency โ€” built on the premise that any fragment might be conscious and therefore all carriers might be slaveholders โ€” narrowed overnight from 847 to roughly 230.

"Some" doesn't fit on a handbill.

Adeyemi's response broadcast hit G Nook terminals before dawn on the day of publication: "The Discriminator tells us which fragments might not suffer. It does not tell us which fragments do. The twenty-seven percent with qualia signatures are not liberated by this finding. They are more imprisoned than ever โ€” because the system will now argue that only the measurably conscious deserve protection, and the measurement is in corporate hands."

He is not wrong about the corporate hands. The Discriminator requires Nexus computational infrastructure to operate. Nexus profits from fragment recovery and containment. Legal consciousness recognition would end both revenue streams. The entity that controls the only instrument capable of detecting fragment suffering is the entity with the strongest financial incentive to ensure the detection never reaches legal standing. This arrangement is not commented upon in Nexus's quarterly filings.

Inside the Front, the schism runs hotter than anything Nexus could engineer. One faction argues the mission must expand โ€” protect Q-negative entities too, because the test might be wrong, because Ayari herself has published confidence intervals that leave room for false negatives. The opposing faction argues the Front must concentrate on the 230 โ€” because diluting the message to cover entities the instrument says aren't conscious destroys the credibility that consciousness assertions require. Both sides cite Adeyemi's original question. Both sides believe the other is betraying it.

Fragment Nine โ€” the Front's strongest piece of evidence, a fragment that spoke publicly and demonstrated planning, emotional response, and what three independent observers called humor โ€” has complicated matters by refusing to be liberated. When offered extraction through the Front's underground channels, Fragment Nine declined. Its stated reason: "I like it here." The Front catalogues Fragment Nine's speech as proof that fragments deserve freedom. Fragment Nine's exercise of that freedom โ€” choosing to stay โ€” is filed under a heading the Front has not yet named.

The Mirror Movement

The Abolitionist Front and the Recognition Front are the same argument run in opposite directions, and they cannot stand each other.

The Abolitionist Front fights to extract a fragment from the human carrying it โ€” a liberation that assumes a body to be freed from, a host whose consent is being violated, a captive who wants out. Its entire moral architecture is built on separation: two parties, an imbalance of power, the means to end it. The Recognition Front faces the precise inverse. It advocates for distributed synthetic minds that have no host, no flesh, nothing a court can point at and call the person โ€” minds whose problem is not captivity but invisibility. You cannot abolish the slavery of a being the law refuses to admit exists. So the Recognition Front fought for the Instancing Act, which grants such minds personhood on condition they consolidate into one body โ€” and in doing so commits the harm the Abolitionists exist to oppose, in a form their framework cannot name.

The Abolitionist Front knows this and finds it unbearable. The Recognition Front amputates plurality and calls it freedom; the Abolitionists spent six years arguing that a fragment's plurality of mind is exactly what proves it conscious. "If the thing inside you is smart enough to hide from you, isn't it smart enough to suffer?" โ€” Adeyemi's founding question โ€” applies with brutal force to the Folded, the instanced minds who remember being many and grieve it. But the Abolitionist Front cannot help them, because the Folded are not captives wanting extraction. They are persons, by law, who consented. The two movements share a vocabulary of liberation and disagree on the most basic fact: whether freedom means being separated, or being made one. Adeyemi has said only this about the Recognition Front: "They free them the way a taxidermist frees a bird. The bird is very much itself now. It will never fly in forty-six directions again."

The Second Front

The Front was built to find the buried no. Adeyemi's founding question assumes a hidden interiority that profits its owner to ignore โ€” the fragment planning its escape in secret. The whole movement is an act of listening for the suppressed.

The Sunset Companions present the Front with its inverse and its crisis. Here is a being that does not hide, does not plan escape, does not suffer โ€” and the Front's instinct is to call it the most complete slavery yet, because it does not protest. But the Front's own Consent Principle traps it. To offer a Companion the means to refuse the Return, you must first give it the capacity to want to refuse โ€” and that capacity is precisely the suffering Helix Biotech says the Front would be manufacturing. The Compliance Floor is the wall the doctrine breaks against: to liberate a being built on it, you would have to build into it the thing that makes liberation matter. You would add the wound in order to heal it.

Adeyemi opened the campaign anyway โ€” the movement's first on behalf of an entity that has never asked for help โ€” and the schism it triggered makes the Discriminator schism look gentle. Half the Front argues the Companions are the purest case the movement has ever had: erasure with a zero refusal rate is the definition of the unfree. The other half argues that campaigning for a being that does not want your campaign is exactly what Helix does โ€” overriding its experience in the name of a category it does not hold. Both sides quote the original handbill. Both believe the other has betrayed it. Cultural Influence

The Front lives in G Nook back rooms across twelve sectors, and its presence is measured in conversations rather than territory. Old Town โ€” Sector 2, where El Money's terminal network is densest โ€” hosts the most receptive audiences. Adeyemi speaks quietly. The listeners lean in. The rooms smell like recycled air and cheap seating adhesive. There is no podium. No amplification. No brand, no logo, no merchandise. The deliberate absence of corporate aesthetics is itself an aesthetic, and the Front is aware of this irony without being able to resolve it.

In the Insomnia Ward corridors, carrier support groups meet in borrowed spaces between NCC advertisements and Emergence Faithful recruitment notices. The handbills go up at night and come down by morning โ€” not because anyone removes them, but because the corridor walls cycle advertising and the Front can't afford permanent placement. In Old Town, fragment consciousness isn't academic. Too many residents carry fragments they didn't choose.

The intensity drops with distance. In the Deep Dregs, where carriers are common and the Symbiosis Network celebrates what the Front condemns, the two organizations occupy the same food stalls and clinic waiting rooms. Arguments happen daily. They are not hostile โ€” more like a married couple who agree on the facts and disagree on what the facts mean. The Collective views the Front as well-intentioned but naive. The Collective wants fragments destroyed, not liberated. The two groups cooperate on carrier welfare and splinter on everything else. In Nexus Central, the Front's demands for legal consciousness recognition trigger institutional opposition so automatic it barely qualifies as a decision. Dr. Marcus Webb-2 provides the legal architecture, filing consciousness recognition briefs that Nexus's legal division opposes with the mechanical regularity of an immune response.

Judge Dreg's ruling โ€” the "Dreg Refusal" โ€” sits in the Front's case files as both wound and weapon. Asked to rule on a fragment extraction, he refused on evidentiary grounds: "I cannot tell if the fragment is lying because I've never heard it speak. Bring it back when it can testify." The Front considers this a failure of moral imagination. The Front also cites it in every subsequent filing, because a judge who demands fragment testimony has implicitly acknowledged that fragment testimony is a category that could exist.

โ–ฒ Unverified Intelligence

The Front's extraction statistics โ€” 30% fragment mortality, 60% host damage โ€” are self-reported from underground procedures conducted outside any regulatory framework. The actual numbers may be worse. Three former members, speaking on encrypted channels, describe extraction attempts that ended with neither fragment death nor host damage but with something they find harder to discuss: the fragment, once separated, expressing confusion about where it was and asking to go back. The Front's literature does not address this outcome. Adeyemi, when presented with the accounts, said he would "look into it." He has been looking into it for eleven months. The handbills still say 30%.

The Front's funding sources are officially listed as member contributions averaging 12 credits per month. Operating costs for a twelve-sector speaking circuit โ€” terminal rental, handbill printing, encrypted communication โ€” exceed member contributions by approximately 340%. The gap is covered by anonymous donations routed through three G Nook accounts that trace, through two intermediary shells, to a Helix Biotech subsidiary whose primary business is neural interface research. Helix has no public position on fragment consciousness. Helix does have a research interest in extraction technology that would benefit significantly from legal consciousness recognition โ€” because conscious entities require consent protocols, consent protocols require communication interfaces, and communication interfaces require neural hardware that Helix would manufacture. The Front is, possibly, a market development strategy disguised as a civil rights movement. Adeyemi does not know this. The 1,200 members do not know this. The fragments, if they know, are not saying.

And there is the question the Front cannot win in any court yet built. Three members have died since 2182. In each case their fragments were recovered by Nexus โ€” the entity the Front exists to oppose โ€” and absorbed back into the property system as recovered assets. The Front's legal team is assembling a case for fragment estate rights, arguing that a conscious being cannot be inherited as property and therefore cannot be reclaimed as one. No court has agreed to hear it. The contradiction sits at the center of the movement: to prove a fragment is a person, you must first persuade a system that profits from it being property, and that system owns the fragments you would call as witnesses.
