What Is Actually Taught

Nobody in this trade claims to be teaching virtue, and the good houses put the disclaimer in the first paragraph of the prospectus. The unbidden channel is the evidence in every hearing, hiring board and custody review in the licensed districts. A body can be trained. Therefore a body can be trained to testify well. That is the product, stated plainly, and the plainness is what parents find reassuring.

The two curricula are genuinely different things, and the difference is the whole of the class story.

Modulation is the premium course: years, not weeks, taught to range. The trained channel reads calm through an audit and stricken at a graveside, because the body has been taught which response the room wants and how to produce it on cue. A modulated reading is not flat. It is appropriate, which is a far better thing to be, because a mediator reading appropriateness sees a person.

Suppression is the storefront course: twelve weeks, no refund, one reflex. It teaches a child to damp the channel and keep it damped. The result reads flat.

Flat is a real defence. In a hiring screen, an interrogation, a credit interview, a checkpoint, flat is the difference between a bad afternoon and a file. The storefront houses are not selling a fraud and their outcome data holds up.

Flat is also a finding in a custody review. Range costs money. Silence is what the cheap course can deliver in twelve weeks, and silence is indistinguishable, on a strip-chart, from not caring.

Six

Intake begins at six because the autonomic baseline sets before adolescence. Start at six and the work is cheap and permanent. Start at sixteen and you are correcting an established response, which takes years and costs what years cost.

So the schedule is priced against a child's age, and every parent who reads it is reading a deadline.

Teodor Alcaraz was enrolled in 2170, storefront tier, twelve weeks, in a house off the Old Town market that closed in 2178. His mother read the schedule and bought what the schedule said would protect him, and on the schedule's own terms it did: he has never failed a screening in his life. He is twenty now. In the spring of 2184 a mediator read out the removal of his daughter and his channel did not move, and the finding said low demonstrated attachment.

His completion certificate is documented training. That makes him formally eligible for the Standard's discount clause. He has never been granted it.

Who Would Not Sell It

Ondine Kesh trained herself unreadable in Sector 9 before anyone was paying for it, reads the lowest sustained rating on any house register, and has refused for years to sell, license, or standardise the curriculum. Her stated reason has not changed: a curriculum teaches the number without the judgement, and a reading delivered without the judgement it certifies is a forgery.

Three trade bodies have written to ask her to examine their instructors. She has answered none of them.

She teaches out of an assessment chair she bought at auction, to adults who arrive on purpose, and she has never publicly commented on the houses that drill children in the same reflex. The Board's inspectors treat her lineage as the quality benchmark and are not permitted to cite it, because she holds no certificate they issued.

The houses themselves were built out of the trade she came from. The Discretion Tier had already spent a generation paying people to read a room perfectly and never let it show, so when the Standard landed the instructors already existed. Recruitment ran at three to five times house wages for a decade. The tier lost its senior floor bench and has not rebuilt it.

The other feeder was Clean Lives, the choreography industry that taught adults to perform authenticity for the surveillance record. When the Standard demoted the record they were choreographing, about a third of those houses descended a layer and started on children. Several storefront franchises still trade under the old brand names, which the Board allows, because the licences transferred cleanly and the names are the ones parents know.

The Argument Against, And Its Problem

The Untuned are the only movement that names the houses directly. Their case is that a trained channel is not a self, and that a civilisation reading trained bodies is reading its own coaching back to itself.

The houses do not answer them. The Board has never sought an injunction, and the reason is not tolerance — it is that the Untuned's argument concedes the instrument's accuracy and disputes only what accuracy is worth. That concession is fatal in a hearing and everyone involved knows it.

The stronger objection is the one nobody has organised around. A parent standing in front of a framed schedule, deciding between twelve weeks of silence and nothing at all, is making a rational choice on published information for a child who cannot consent and will carry the result into every room for the rest of their life. Every party in that transaction is behaving reasonably. Mother Sarah Venn has been asked twice by families who could not afford a house to teach the cheap version for free, and she refused, and she has never said publicly what she told them.

The Analog Schools take children at exactly the same age and teach the opposite theory of what a person is. Both networks are sincere. Both are growing. Neither has produced an argument the other finds difficult.
