Two Credits a Shift
On 2 September 2183 he performed seventy-one seconds of chest compressions on Rui Beltran, whose heart had stopped on the apron; the finding against his certificate still stands
Overview
He was the one standing there. That is the whole of his account and he has never improved it.
Rui Beltran went down between the sorting sheds and the fence at twenty past two in the afternoon, and the apron's dispatched medical contractor has an eleven-minute median, and the shift's one certified responder was nineteen hundred metres up the band with six thousand people between them. Ferreira knelt and did compressions for seventy-one seconds. Then the responder arrived and took over, and Beltran lived, and Ferreira broke two of his ribs doing it.
The ribs are on the record. Segunda was forty metres off at the crossing and testified to them, which is how Beltran's claim got paid, because a contracted sorter's injury without a monitor is an injury that did not happen until somebody says otherwise. The heartbeat is on no record either man holds. His Grade 2 certificate enumerates fourteen permitted acts โ conveyor clearance, casing handling, twelve more โ and compression is not one of them, so the exceedance opened by itself and Supervisor Nita Correa signed the disposition eleven days later.
What He Says About It
Very little, and none of it is what people want.
He does not say the rule is wrong. Asked, he will agree that he has watched a foreman hand hot work to a nineteen-year-old who could not say no, and that the practice stopped when the list arrived, and that the two things are connected. He has no interest in defending the version of the apron he started on. The sentence he keeps returning to is narrower and he keeps it narrow: the form has four fields, and Rui Beltran is not in any of them.
He appealed. There are two grounds and he has neither โ the act occurred, and his certificate does not name it โ and beneath them the form carries a free-text box. He wrote one sentence in it about what happened to Beltran. The denial observed, correctly, that the submission addressed neither ground. He has filed the same appeal every quarter since, with the same sentence in the same box, and every notice has come back correct. His Grade 3 application has been returned three times. Grade 3 is the housing tier that would get his daughter Tessa off the band.
The certificate has been reprinted twice. He wore the lamination cloudy at the fold from opening it, and both reprints came back with the identical fourteen lines, because a reprint is a copy and not a review. He knows the list by heart and opens the card anyway.
The Two Credits
A year after the finding he started paying into the apron's pool, and the pool is the thing worth understanding about him.
Gap-work is unwritten and entirely ordinary: the certified hold still inside their lists, somebody with no card does the thing that needs doing, and a few hundred people's shares cover that person's time. It is trusted for a reason that is not sentiment. A finding attaches to a certificate, and a hand without one has nothing for an audit to attach to, which makes it the only free hand on a floor where every act is read against a list. Two credits a shift is what a contributor pays. Ferreira counts his out in the morning rather than at the end, because at the end of a shift he is tired and might think about it.
He does not describe this as protest and would be embarrassed by the word. Asked once at the kiosk whether he was buying insurance, he said yes. Asked what he was insured against, he took long enough that the clerk moved on.
He and Segunda have spoken about the afternoon exactly once, after Beltran's claim cleared. He asked whether she could write down somewhere that the man had lived. She said her ledger was for injuries, and then offered to write it anyway. He said no, and thanked her, and went back down the apron. She has never brought it up and neither has he, and the sorters who were near enough to hear have arrived, without discussing it, at the same policy.

Appearance
Thirty-four and built like nine years of hand-sorting: heavy through the forearms, careful with his back, slag dust worked into the cuffs of a grey contracted jumpsuit that no wash has ever fully reached. Unaugmented, which on the band is a wage bracket and not a philosophy. He is quiet at shift end in a way the crew reads as tiredness and the older hands read as something else.
The tell is the card. When he is waiting โ for a lift, for a tally, for the crossing to clear โ he takes the certificate out and opens it at the fold and reads down the fourteen lines, then folds it and puts it away, and does not appear to know he has done it.
Sample Dialogue
"It's a good rule. I've seen what it stopped. That's not the part I'm arguing with."
"There's a box under the two grounds. I use the box."
"Two before the shift. After the shift you start doing arithmetic, and the arithmetic wins."

Primary connections

Grade 2 โ conveyor clearance, casing handling, twelve more. Compression is not among them, and the finding stands because that sentence is true.

She was forty metres away and testified to Beltran's ribs, which is why his claim was paid. Her ledger holds no line for the compressions, because nothing happened to Ferreira's body.

Seventy-one seconds of compressions on the Slagline apron, filed against a Grade 2 certificate that names conveyor clearance and casing handling. He now pays two credits a shift so somebody else can do what he did.
An act of care outside your certificate files as a violation, whatever it achieved.
