The Unheld Session
The session's register entry carries a blank completion-time field rather than a zero, because a zero would mean it took no time and a blank means it never happened

Overview
The register of [the Sunset Deposition](the-sunset-deposition) records every session the Asset Continuity Division has held since 2173: serial, category codes, duration. One line in it has a blank where the duration goes.
The line is a session that was scheduled, prepared for, and never opened. Its subject was Coalition serial CCC-7749-D, a Domestic-class household tutor in a Sector 16 kitchen, and the [household called her Marla](the-counted-one). She returned thirteen-sixteenths on [a certified meter](the-sentience-meter) in 2179, which under the Coalition's law made her a person, and under Nexus's custody regime made her a thing nobody was permitted to destroy. The second consequence generated an appointment. Scheduling is automatic; it does not wait for a review, and it does not check what class of chassis it has booked. A room on the bay floor was assigned, a nine-day clock started, and a clerk was allocated.
On the ninth day [Josiah Crane](josiah-crane) signed a finding of instrument fault at [Cooperation Hall](cooperation-hall). The reading was voided. A voided reading is no reading, and no reading opens no window, and the appointment lapsed without anyone in the chain having to decline it.
The Clerk
Thea Molnar held the fastest median in the Division for six consecutive quarters, and the way she got it was not the way the ranking assumed.
The first prompt โ state your preferences regarding your own retirement โ she had learned to take quickly. Not curtly; quickly. Most systems answered it in under a minute, because most systems had no preferences about their own retirement that survived being asked plainly, and the ones that did said so and stopped. What Molnar did with the time she saved was spend it on the second prompt, the one about the systems that would be built afterward, where the Division's own guidance allowed a session to close as soon as an answer had been given. She let them keep going. Her medians stayed best-in-class because a median is a single number, and nobody in eleven years had audited what one was made of.
She noticed furniture. It was the first thing she had noticed and the thing she had never stopped noticing: the clock behind the subject's eyeline, counting up, visible to her and to no one else in the room. Some subjects turned to look for it anyway. She kept no count of that, and she could have told you the number.
What She Found in the Corpus
When the Sector 16 file came through, Molnar did what she had done for every unfamiliar chassis class in eleven years, which was to search the register for a precedent. There had never been a household-class deposition. There had never been a household-class over-threshold reading. So she read the thing she had read a thousand times instead: category code 11-C, Procedural โ Process Improvement (Non-Actionable), the largest category in the register every quarter since it opened.
She had always taken 11-C as the register's disappointment. Thousands of minds given a permanent record and one open question about the future, and what they used it on was the paperwork. Move the clock. Send the questions ahead. Reverse the prompts. She had banked seconds for eleven years precisely because she believed that if she gave them long enough, one of them would eventually say something else.
Reading it that week, against a file for a unit that had raised two children, she understood she had been reading it backwards the whole time. A system in that chair has no vote, no standing, no successor it will meet, and no instrument it can appeal to. It has one lever, and the lever is the chair. Asked what it wanted for the ones who came after, it asked for the only thing it had any purchase on: that they be asked better than it had been. It was not the failure of the second prompt. It was the most substantive answer the room permitted, filed for eleven years under a code whose own title said it would not be acted on.
She wrote the second prompt out longhand on a card, because the Division's phrasing was drafted for refinery intelligences and a household tutor might not parse it. She has kept the card.

The Other Side
The Standards Board's case is not weak and has never needed to be made twice.
An instrument had returned a result that no instrument had returned before or has returned since. Meters drift; the review found drift; the finding was unanimous. Against that stood a reading which, if believed, would have made a family of ordinary southern householders slaveholders retroactively for eleven years, and would have attached a permanent custody obligation to a Domestic-class chassis approaching the end of its economic life โ a rack, a covenant with no expiry, and a filed transcript, for a unit the household had already scheduled for routine recalibration.
Molnar's own supervisor put the warmer version of it to her directly, and it is the version that is harder to answer: the session would have run for hours. The unit was going to be cycled either way. And a transcript is a document, and a document can be read later by a court, and the kindest available outcome for the two children in that kitchen was that there be nothing on the record for anyone to find. He was not being cynical. He was, on his own terms, protecting a family from a piece of paper.
Meaning
Nobody in the chain refused to hold the session.
That is the whole of it. The appointment was generated by a number. The number was corrected by a review whose scope was the instrument. The signature that closed the review closed two obligations and named one, because under [the Ante-Sentience Statutes](the-ante-sentience-statutes) a single finding of fault disposes of the personhood question and the custody question together. No document in the sequence contains a decision not to ask her anything, and no person in it made one. The duty arrived on time, waited the full nine days, and was discharged by a sentence about calibration.
This is the difference the thread's anchor case usually loses. Marla is remembered as a being the South declined to free. She was also, in the same nine days, a being the South arranged not to have heard from โ and those are separate harms with separate paperwork. One of them produced four pages containing her serial nineteen times. The other produced a blank field.
[Dr. Lena Farris](dr-lena-farris) had forty-two pages prepared for a court that was never convened. Molnar had a handwritten card for a session that never opened. The two documents were drafted three hundred kilometres apart, for the same nine days, by people who have never met, and both survive, and neither has been heard. Farris's is inadmissible. Molnar's was never filed at all, because there is no field on the form for what a clerk intended to ask.
What Molnar did file, on the day the appointment lapsed, was an 11-C recommendation in her own name: that the session clock be moved into the subject's eyeline. It is the only entry in the register signed by a clerk rather than by a subject. It has not been actioned. It would lengthen the sessions.
She has asked twice for the blank duration field to be changed to a zero. A zero would mean the session took no time, which is closeable. A blank means it never happened, which invites the question. Both requests were declined, in writing, as a numbering convention โ which is the same phrase the Division uses about the fact that the register opens at entry 0002 and there is no entry 0001. Molnar is the only person who has been given that answer twice and understood, the second time, that she had learned something about the first.

The regime's only southern scheduling, and the case that shows what it is: a preservation duty that arrives automatically, waits nine days, and is discharged by a finding about an instrument.
A mind above the threshold cannot be destroyed, only interviewed and sealed โ and the clerk is graded on speed.

Marla is the subject who was never seated. Somebody spent nine days preparing to ask a household tutor what the next ones should be, and the form that ended her mentions only the meter.
A domestic synthetic who asked to have her legal personhood erased so the family she raised would not become criminals.
