A Reconstruction housing officer named the tract for the standing water below the shelf. The other meaning of wake entered Tomás Linares's Dead Words Index in 2179. The Index lists Wake Hollow as the last place the word is spoken, and the only place it is not understood.

Marit Calder's mother died in 2183. The rite covered the afternoon, not the body, and no one in Wake Hollow knew what to do with a body. She went down to the Deep Dregs and found Tomás Linares, who still holds the full washing. He has taught her the washing. She takes notes.

Wake Hollow is 240 single-storey units on a fog shelf above the Corridor coast road. Helix Biotech built it in 2149–2151 as Reconstruction housing for Cascade survivors. In 2152 about 2,200 of them signed at the tract clinic for Temperance, the affective-correction schedule. About 1,300 corrected children were born between 2153 and 2157. Their 1,100 children inherited it. The Co-Authored Generation started here, thirty years early.
The town has recorded no assault, no theft and no formal dispute since 2178. The doors have no locks. The requisition for door hardware has come back unfilled six years running.
Conditions
Helix has collected no rent since 2161. A cohort that scatters is a study that ends. Since 2181, prospective parents from four districts use the same clinic for pre-conception consults. They drive past the results on the way in.
Visitors find the town pleasant for three days. By the fifth it is unbearable. They cannot say what changed.
The Hall and the Seawall
When the first volunteers died, their children found an empty afternoon after each body was collected. In 2175 they filled it: a folding table, a bowl of water, a reading, and silence. The silence settled at four minutes. Close to the whole town attends the second afternoon. No attendee reports feeling anything. No one has proposed shortening it.
The speaking order is pinned inside the hall door. It has been revised eleven times. No resident claims to have written it. No resident has spoken out of turn.
Twice a year, on no fixed date, the town walks to the seawall bench and faces the water for about a quarter of an hour. Asked why, residents say it is what is done. They are not being evasive.
