The Bessemer Reef

Overview
The Three-Week War's loss ledger includes, in one line, two orbital platforms. This is where one of them is.
Platform Bessemer was the elder of Ironclad's pre-Elevator pair โ rocket-lifted in the 2150s, a foundry habitat from the era when orbital mass cost a hundred times what the tether now charges. What exactly killed her station-keeping in Week 3 sits inside the war's classified orbital annex; what is public is the arc. She came down across the Southern Marshes in pieces over four kilometers, her crew already gone to lifeboats โ save eleven, whose names are known, and whose grave is therefore the entire Reef, which complicates everything that has happened on it since.
Because what has happened since is salvage. The Reef is the only place in the Sprawl where orbital alloy โ vacuum-cured, weld-signatured, metallurgy the ground cannot reproduce โ can be reached without paying Ironclad for the ride up. Marsh crews work it by tide chart and oral map, punt-borne, wading the sinkmud between the great silvered ribs. An ingot with the vacuum signature is worth a season. The marsh takes a salvager most years, by tide or mud or a structure thirteen years into deciding when to finish collapsing, and the crews accept the rate with the fatalism of people mining the sky's one accident. Ironclad reasserts title annually by certified notice. The notices are pinned, unread, in a shack the tide floods twice a day โ the Sprawl's least effective legal ritual, performed anyway, because the alternative is admitting the marsh has adverse possession of a corporate platform, and no lawyer will write that sentence first.
Her sister still flies. Platform Crucible, crippled the same week, was sealed rather than dropped โ a war grave in decaying orbit, reboosted by an automated tug on a maintenance contract now forty years long on paper, that nobody at Ironclad will cancel and nobody will explain. At dusk on clear nights her glint crosses the marsh, and the salvage crews working her sister's bones name her without looking up. The Reef's crews hold one etiquette absolutely, unposted and untested: the eleven's section of the debris field โ the crew module's arc โ is not worked. Alloy prices being what they are, the etiquette says more about the marshes than any registry could.
| Type | Wreck site โ war grave and salvage ground |
|---|---|
| Location | The Southern Marshes, Sector 22 |
| Population | Marsh crews by tide; eleven, permanently |
| Controlled By | Ironclad on paper; the tide in fact |
| Notable | The Sprawl's only beached orbital alloy; Crucible's dusk glint overhead |
| Came Down | 2171, Week 3; spread across four kilometers of marsh |
| Hazard | Tide, sinkmud, and structure collapse; the marsh takes a salvager most years |
Conditions Report
Salt flats, mirror-water at low tide, sinkmud that swallows to the hip without ceremony. The wreck's great ribs read from a kilometer off; closer, the strangeness arrives โ metal weathered thirteen years that still carries the sheen of having been made where there is no air. Sound: marsh birds, tide, and the flex-groan of structure the crews call her settling. Navigation is oral and jealously kept; a crew's tide-and-route map is its capital, dowry, and eulogy format. Official hazard postings exist. They are used to level punts.
Strategic Assessment
The Reef is the AI Haves and Have-Nots ledger rendered in metallurgy: orbit's wealth touched ground exactly once, by catastrophe, and the Sprawl has been picking at the contact point ever since. Everything about the site is a small treaty between incompatible claims โ corporate title against marsh possession, war grave against ore body, the sealed sister overhead against the opened sister below โ and every one of those treaties holds through the same mechanism as the big one: nobody involved can afford the argument. The eleven keep the Reef honest. The tide keeps it humble. The glint at dusk keeps the question overhead, on schedule, twice a night.

Atmosphere
The Reef announces itself to the ear before the eye: the deep groan of settling alloy as the tide loads and unloads eighty thousand tonnes of platform, a sound divers describe as the sight of a whale made audible. The water tastes of iron a kilometer out โ salvage crews call it the Bessemer tang โ and the smell topside is rust, brine, and cutting-torch smoke. Below ten meters the temperature drops fast where her hull shades the current, and the touch of the metal is wrong for the ocean: still faintly smooth, machine-finished, a texture the sea has had only thirteen years to argue with.
Reef alloy is identifiable by its vacuum-cured weld signature; a beached ingot with the signature is worth a marsh crew's season
Ironclad reasserts salvage title every year by certified notice; the notices are pinned, unread, in a marsh-crew shack the tide floods twice daily โ the Sprawl's least effective legal ritual, performed anyway
