Overview
The Grid Collapse two days earlier had shown what happens when you remove a sector's electricity. Operation DEGAUSS asked the adjacent question: what happens when you remove its memory.
In eleven minutes on the morning of Day 13, Ironclad Industries' scour charges detonated over three Nexus research districts — shaped electromagnetic munitions, no blast to speak of, a violet arc-glow that witnesses describe the way people describe lightning that failed to arrive. Decades of development data vaporized, including ORACLE research Nexus classifies as irreplaceable in the specific tone it reserves for things it has tried to replace. And across the three districts, several thousand ongoing medical treatments — dosage management, neural calibration, automated life support — terminated mid-procedure, because the treatments were software, and the software was the target's collateral.
The Purge's death toll is the war's honest number: nobody knows it. The census systems, the billing systems, the medical records that would have counted the dead were the same infrastructure the charges scoured. Post-war demography counts by absence — accounts that stopped being billed, subscribers who never logged back in — and publishes a range four digits wide at both ends. The Sprawl keeps a permanent record of everything. Day 13 is the hole in it, and the hole has edges but no floor.
Aftermath
The treaty halted scour-charge production nine days later — not by name; Article 1's neutrality umbrella simply made the munition's only economical targets illegal. The existing inventory was never surrendered, audited, or located, a sentence that has kept salvage brokers and security services in steady conversation for thirteen years.
One erased relay station on the Nexus-Ironclad border became, five years later, the Dead Spot — the surveillance dead zone the war accidentally donated to everyone the Sprawl watches. And inside Nexus Dynamics, Day 13 concluded an argument that Day 11 had started: elegance had made the corporation legible, and legible had made it mortal. The hardening doctrine its engineers call the Ugly Build dates its first memo to Day 14.
Scholars of the Forgetting Wars call Day 13 the wars' industrial revolution — erasure at munition scale — and the Upgrade Treadmill's case files keep the Purge as the day the Sprawl learned that treatments which are software share the failure modes of software.
The dead have one memorial: the paper chart. Hospitals across the three districts adopted, and keep, a practice of maintaining one handwritten chart per critical patient — redundant, inefficient, universally maintained. Nobody mandated it. The nurses of 2171 started it and never stopped, and the habit outlived every one of the committees that tried to deprecate it.

Secrets & Mysteries
What was in the third district. Sectors 2 and 5 held the research the strike officially targeted. The Sector 15 site was a records annex — administrative, low-value, and hit first, with the largest charge, at the tightest focus. Nexus's loss filings for the annex are sealed even from the war's discovery record, under a privilege category invented for the purpose. Whatever Ironclad wanted unremembered, both corporations have since agreed it stays that way — the war's only genuinely bilateral secret.
