Overview
A Cohort Camp is a service that deliberately teaches a small group of children the same thing, wrongly, at the same time โ so that they will have someone, decades later, who remembers it too.
The rich noticed the loss first, the way the rich always notice the Warmth Tax first, because the rich are the ones who can afford to buy back what their own optimization removed. Their children, raised by the Pace, emerged brilliant and unreachable โ each on a private cognitive path, each unable to make small talk with the others because no two of them had ever learned the same thing at the same time. So an industry grew to manufacture the one thing the Pace could not: a shared childhood, installed on purpose.
Parents enroll a child for a season in a curriculum engineered to be identical across the small group and slightly, memorably incorrect. The same flawed proof. The same misremembered date. The same song with the wrong second verse. The children are mis-taught in synchrony, deliberately, at enormous cost โ because the product is not the lesson. The product is the future moment when two of them meet across a negotiating table or a dinner party or a deathbed, and one misquotes the verse, and the other finishes it wrong the same way, and something passes between them that no certified warmth and no perfect education can produce: we were taught the same lie. We are the same age inside. A peer.

It sells the deliberate, memorable, collective mistake โ the thing the Analog Schools produce for free, as the natural exhaust of being too poor to teach each child alone.
Good Fortune finances enrollment as a luxury-development product, marketed in the vocabulary of estate planning. You are not buying a school, the materials explain; you are buying your child someone, later. The actuarial division has run the tables on loneliness and knows precisely what a guaranteed peer is worth across a lifetime โ fewer single-occupant-household spending spikes, lower late-life despair indices, a measurable reduction in the consumption pattern of a person with no one to remember them. The brochures never use the word classmate. The word is dead. They use future witnesses.
The Sincerity of It
The horror is in how loving it is.
No parent enrolling a child in a Cohort Camp thinks they are doing something cruel. They are doing the most loving thing the market allows: paying, at terrible expense, to give their child the accidental gift that thirty bored strangers in a room used to give each other for nothing. The cruelty is structural, not personal. The camps exist because shared childhood became a luxury good, and luxury goods are the Warmth Tax's whole catalogue. A society spent a fortune building a machine โ the Pace โ to optimize the classmate out of existence, and now spends a second fortune building an industry to put one back, manufactured, scheduled, recognizable thirty years later by a wrong note two children were quietly taught to sing.
Mother Venn, whose schools do the same thing for free and call it being too poor to do otherwise, refuses to name it a tragedy in front of the children. "They'd hear me say their friends are a consolation prize," she said. The camps say nothing of the kind. The camps simply sell the consolation prize to the people who can afford the original loss.
