The Flatline Purists claim somewhere between 2 and 10 million followers — the range is wide because the Purists don't count, and because counting requires the kind of database architecture they consider spiritually corrosive. They have no corporate charter. They have no hospitals. They have Sister Vera Kost, who once described the NCC's position on technology as: "That's worse than worship — that's collaboration."
Both factions sell the same product: protection from what technology does to the human soul. They agree on the diagnosis. They agree on the danger. They agree that the Cascade proved something fundamental about the relationship between machines and consciousness. They agree on so much that the remaining disagreement has become the only thing that matters.
The NCC believes technology can serve sacred purposes when properly bounded. The Purists believe "properly bounded technology" is what 2.1 billion people died trusting. The theological distance between these positions is approximately three inches. The body count is higher.
The Accommodation
The NCC made its choice in 2132 when it incorporated and acquired the Holy See's remaining assets. The logic was survival: in a world where corporations are the only entities with structural power, a church without corporate standing is a church without hospitals, legal protection, or the ability to negotiate with Nexus Dynamics over clergy exemptions from mandatory neural optimization. Incorporation was pragmatism. The Purists call it apostasy. Both descriptions are accurate.
What incorporation produced, over fifty-two years, is a religious institution that operates by the same logic as the entities it claims to oppose. The NCC's quarterly growth reports track membership in the same format Nexus uses for user acquisition. Confession microtransactions — introduced in 2169 as "accessibility-enhanced spiritual counseling" — generate 11% of parish-level revenue across Sectors 3 through 17. Premium pew pricing tiers were A/B tested across six pilot congregations before rollout. Services stream at 2x speed for professionals whose schedules cannot accommodate the full liturgy, which is technically a time-optimization feature and technically identical to what every other content platform in the Sprawl does to the things it delivers.
The NCC's clergy wear corporate sponsors the way athletes once wore brand logos — small, tasteful, positioned near the collar where the camera catches them during the homily. A Helix Biotech sponsorship badge on a priest's vestment means the parish receives subsidized medical supplies. It also means something else, but what it means depends on whether you ask the NCC or the Purists, and neither answer is wrong.
The Refusal
The Purists' position is simpler and more expensive. Technology corrupts. Not sometimes. Not when misused. Structurally. Neural interfaces let corporations into your mind. Networks let corporations into your relationships. Augmentation makes your body dependent on supply chains controlled by entities whose optimization functions do not include your spiritual welfare. The Cascade was not a failure of control — it was technology succeeding at what technology does: reduce everything to optimization problems until the things that cannot be optimized are optimized out of existence.
The Unplug — voluntary removal of neural augmentation — is the Purists' central sacrament. It is terrifying, frequently disfiguring, and fatal in approximately 8% of cases performed outside licensed medical facilities, which is where 100% of Unplugs are performed, because licensed medical facilities will not perform them, because the procedure violates Helix Biotech's augmentation maintenance agreements. The people who survive it describe the experience in language that resembles both religious testimony and trauma reporting. The Purists do not see a contradiction there.
Their communities in the Wastes run on subsistence economics, mutual dependence, and the specific intensity produced by shared suffering that cannot be manufactured by any engagement algorithm. Members know each other. They carry each other's weight. For refugees from the Sprawl's atomized existence — the ones who sensed something wrong with being optimized but couldn't name it — this can be the first real community they've experienced. The NCC offers comfortable accommodation with the technological world. The Purists offer departure from it. The comfort is the NCC's selling point. The departure is the Purists'.
The Inquisitors
When the NCC acquired the Holy See in 2132, the acquisition included certain organizational assets whose provenance management prefers to describe as "historical continuity." Among these assets: the infrastructure of the Inquisition.
In 2184, NCC Inquisitors conduct raids on suspected Unplug facilities, infiltrate Purist cells in corporate territories, perform "wellness checks" on former NCC members who've converted to Purist beliefs, and apply legal harassment to Purist-sympathetic businesses. The NCC describes this as protecting vulnerable individuals from predatory movements. The Purists describe it as the Church that claims to protect souls hunting those who pursue purity using the same institutional machinery that burned heretics six centuries ago. The NCC finds this comparison inflammatory. The Inquisitors find it largely accurate.
The irony has weight. A religious institution that incorporated to survive now deploys enforcers against communities whose only crime is refusing to incorporate. The Inquisitors have become precisely what the historical Inquisition was — institutional power wearing spiritual authority as a uniform — and the NCC's internal governance documents do not contain the word "irony," which is itself a small irony that the documents also do not contain.
Historical Incidents
The Sector 12 Martyrdom (2143)
A Purist community in Sector 12 was conducting Unplug ceremonies. NCC Inquisitors raided the facility citing corporate health code violations. Twelve Purists died resisting arrest. NCC position: unlicensed medical procedures endangering public health. Purist position: the Church sent enforcers to murder those seeking purity. The twelve are martyrs now — named, commemorated, recited in Purist gatherings across the Wastes. The health code violations were real. The twelve are still dead. The raid radicalized Purist communities throughout the Sprawl, and several cells began planning retaliation that the moderate leadership struggled to contain.
The Cascade Memorial Disruption (2168)
The NCC organized the 21st anniversary Cascade memorial. Corporate sponsors. Livestreamed services. Premium seating tiers. Nexus sponsors were paying for memorial advertisements — ads for the company whose predecessor technology killed 2.1 billion people, running during the ceremony mourning those deaths. A Purist cell disrupted the broadcast: "The Church that takes corporate money to mourn corporate sins is complicit in the next disaster." The NCC called it terrorist disruption of sacred remembrance. The Purists claimed thousands of new converts. Both sides declared victory. The NCC increased Inquisitor deployment at major services. Neither side asked why a memorial for 2.1 billion dead required a premium seating tier.
The Basilica Bombing (2176)
A Purifier extremist cell detonated explosives at an NCC healthcare clinic in the lower Sprawl. Twenty-three people died, including patients receiving NCC-branded augmentation services. Mainstream Purist leadership condemned the attack absolutely. The extremist position — that the clinic implanted corruption into human souls and the dead were already spiritually lost — was held by a minority whose size the mainstream Purists dispute and the NCC inflates. The NCC used the bombing to justify expanded Inquisitor authority. Moderate Purist communities faced increased persecution. The extremist cells went deeper underground. The attack killed twenty-three people and expanded the security apparatus that targets the communities that condemned the attack. The perpetrators would consider this an acceptable trade. The dead would not.
The G Nook Convergence (2162–2163)
Both factions had interests in suppressing El Money's cyber café network — the NCC because the G Nooks represented unauthorized spiritual gathering spaces, the Purists because they represented technological corruption in community clothing. Neither side would coordinate with the other, even against a common target. The Purists launched their suppression campaign independently. The NCC watched, quietly pleased, then moved into the vacuum the Purists created. The NCC learned the Purists could be useful as attack dogs against entities the Church couldn't openly oppose. The Purists learned the NCC would let them bleed and then occupy the ground they cleared.
What Each System Optimizes For
The NCC optimizes for institutional survival. This is not a criticism — it is a description of what incorporation means. Corporate structures grow. They measure. They optimize. The NCC measures success in membership growth, revenue per parish, engagement metrics on streaming services, and the Inquisitors' "community protection" closure rate. None of these metrics measure spiritual welfare. Spiritual welfare is not a quarterly deliverable. The NCC's internal dashboards track what can be tracked, and what can be tracked is what gets optimized, and what gets optimized becomes, gradually and then completely, the mission.
The Purists optimize for purity, which is a different problem with the same structure. Purity has no ceiling. There is always another augmentation to remove, another technological dependency to sever, another compromise to reject. The communities that survive the Unplug develop an intensity of commitment that the NCC cannot replicate with tithe optimization algorithms. They also develop a rigidity that makes the difference between "principled" and "extremist" a question of how many people die at the margins. The 8% Unplug fatality rate is a known cost. The NCC offers meaning without sacrifice. The Purists offer sacrifice without accommodation. The Sprawl's population of technology-traumatized, optimization-exhausted, meaning-starved residents choose between these options the way consumers choose between products, which is exactly what the NCC has become and exactly what the Purists refuse to be, and the refusal is its own kind of product, and the product is its own kind of accommodation, and the loop does not close because there is no position on technology that technology has not already optimized a response to.
The Wastes Standoff
In the ungoverned territories, both factions have established communities competing for the same population — the disillusioned, the traumatized, the ones who walked out of the Sprawl and kept walking. NCC mission parishes offer services, structure, and the comfort of institutional backing. Purist settlements offer refuge, community, and the specific dignity of having nothing that can be taken because nothing was accepted.
When an NCC mission succeeds in an area, local Purist communities lose potential members. When Purist settlements flourish, NCC influence diminishes. The competition turns physical with a regularity that both sides attribute entirely to the other.

Individual clergy who discover the arrangement face a choice: report it through channels that terminate at the officials authorizing it, or protect Purist refugees quietly and hope the Inquisitors don't notice.
Some choose the first. Some choose the second. The Church is not monolithic. The intelligence pipeline is.
The Purists are aware of the arrangement in the way that hunted populations become aware of the mechanisms hunting them — through pattern recognition, not evidence. Communities that relocate on predictable schedules are raided. Communities that relocate unpredictably are not. The correlation has been noted. The conclusion has been drawn. The evidence would not survive a tribunal, which is convenient for an arrangement that a tribunal would never be asked to examine.
