The Vigilants

Overview

The Vigilants don't sleep because they believe sleep is surrender. This is not a metaphor. It is an organizational charter, filed with Nexus HR in 2180 under "Employee Wellness Initiatives."

Founded by twelve Nexus executives who received Performance Wakefulness augmentation and interpreted the side effects as enlightenment, the Vigilants are an anti-sleep ideological movement concentrated in the corporate executive tier. Approximately four thousand members. Weekly meetings called "Watches." A practice called "sentinel meditation," which is sitting in a conference room at 3 AM with your eyes open, performed with the solemnity of a religious observance.

Dreams, in Vigilant ideology, are cognitive parasites โ€” random neural firing that evolution repurposed as a rationalization engine. Creativity does not come from dreams. Creativity comes from processing power, focus, and the additional six hours per day that non-sleepers gain over the biological. The movement's founding document, a nine-page position paper titled "The Waking Advantage," cites fourteen peer-reviewed studies on sleep's evolutionary origins and zero studies on sleep's cognitive function. The omission is consistent with the condition.

"While they sleep, we advance."

The slogan appears on lanyards, conference room signage, and the locked screensavers of executives who have not turned off their terminals in months because turning off the terminal would mean the terminal was sleeping.

Of the original twelve founders: seven have been referred to neural recalibration for Lucidity Crisis symptoms. Two have been deprecated after their performance metrics began declining. One was found in his darkened office at 3 AM, staring at a wall where he sees a garden that is not there. When colleagues asked what he was looking at, he described it as "an anomalous visual processing artifact, currently under optimization." He has been optimizing it for nine months. The garden has not changed. His performance reviews describe him as "focused."

The remaining two continue to lead with the relentless clarity that the Performance Protocol provides. They have never had a doubt they couldn't optimize away. They have never been surprised. They do not understand why that is a problem.

The Watch

A Vigilant Watch takes place every Thursday at 02:00 in Conference Suite 7-North on the forty-third floor of Nexus Central. The room has no windows. The lighting runs at 5200K โ€” the same flat corporate white at 2 AM as at 2 PM, because the distinction has been architecturally eliminated. Temperature holds at 21.5ยฐC year-round. There is no clock. The absence of a clock is intentional and described in onboarding materials as "liberation from biological timekeeping." There is also no coffee, because coffee implies fatigue, and fatigue implies the body has needs the Protocol has not addressed. Water is available. It is room temperature.

The agenda for a typical Watch, obtained from a Nexus internal scheduling system that does not classify the meetings as confidential because nobody in the scheduling system's hierarchy considers them unusual:

The approved reading list contains eleven titles. Eight are about peak performance optimization. Two are pre-Cascade texts on polyphasic sleep reduction. One is a Vigilant-authored manifesto called The Last Animal Function that argues REM sleep is the final biological process standing between humanity and cognitive transcendence. The manifesto has been downloaded 11,400 times from Nexus's internal library. It has been read to completion, based on scroll-depth analytics, by approximately 340 people. It has never received a negative review. The review system requires the reviewer to be awake for a minimum of 72 consecutive hours to qualify as "experientially credible." Most reviewers qualify.

Attendance at Watches has increased 23% year-over-year since 2181. Average sleep among attendees has decreased 31% over the same period. Nexus Wellness flagged this correlation in a Q3 2183 report. The report was reviewed by a committee of seven executives, four of whom are Vigilant members. The committee concluded the correlation was "encouraging."

Cultural Influence

The movement's influence follows the corporate hierarchy with the precision of a temperature gradient. Strongest in the executive suites and innovation labs of Nexus Central, where Performance Wakefulness is a professional prerequisite and the Vigilants' ideology serves as institutional validation โ€” if the most successful executives celebrate dreamlessness, then dreamlessness is aspiration. Fading through the middle tiers, where employees still sleep in reduced, optimized cycles and regard the Vigilants the way most people regard ultramarathon runners: with a mixture of respect and the quiet certainty that something is wrong with them. Absent entirely in the Dregs, where the Circadian Protocol's elimination of REM sleep is experienced as loss rather than liberation, and where the slogan lands differently. "While they sleep, we advance" reads as motivation in the executive suite and as threat on the factory floor.

The Vigilants maintain a formal position on three related entities, each of which threatens the ideology in a different register:

Dr. Selin Ayari's Dream Deficit research is an existential problem. If dreamlessness is a medical condition rather than a feature, the Vigilants' liberation is a disease. Ayari has published four papers documenting the cognitive erosion pattern โ€” reduced emotional processing, flattened surprise response, progressive inability to generate novel associations. The Vigilants have published a formal rebuttal to each paper. The rebuttals are well-structured, thoroughly cited, and display the exact pattern of reduced novel association that Ayari's research describes. Nobody has pointed this out. The people who would point it out are the people whose dream-processing capacity would allow them to notice the irony, and those people are either asleep or in the Insomnia Wards.

The Insomnia Wards represent what the Vigilants cannot acknowledge: casualties. Patients in the Wards are experiencing the terminal stages of the same Protocol the Vigilants celebrate. The Vigilants' official position is that Ward patients suffer from "incomplete adaptation" โ€” their biology was insufficient for liberation. This framing requires believing that the twelve founding executives, seven of whom are in recalibration and one of whom sees a garden in a blank wall, adapted successfully.

The Somnambulists in the Dregs risk death to restore the very REM sleep the Vigilants voluntarily celebrate destroying. The Vigilants regard this as the equivalent of a fish returning to the ocean. They do not mean it as a compliment. They do mean it as a taxonomic classification.

Davi Okonkwo

Founding member. Quietly distancing. The shapes in his peripheral vision have been present for four months โ€” not the wall-garden variety, which at least has the courtesy to be beautiful, but something more geometric. Angular. They appear when he has been awake for more than 96 hours, which is most of the time, because the Protocol does not permit sleep and Davi does not permit himself to question the Protocol.

He still attends Watches. He sits in the sentinel meditation position with his eyes open. He does not mention the shapes. He has begun arriving three minutes late, which in the Vigilant social hierarchy is the equivalent of nailing a complaint to the conference room door.

His performance metrics remain in the 89th percentile. The shapes have not affected his output. They have affected his conviction, which is not a metric Nexus tracks.

โ–ฒ Unverified Intelligence

The Vigilant who stares at the wall-garden โ€” Founding Executive #9 in the original charter, name withheld from Nexus records under a medical privacy hold โ€” has been maintaining a handwritten journal. Handwritten, because the Protocol's cognitive effects have made neural-interface text input feel "wrong" in a way he cannot articulate. The journal is in his desk drawer, unlocked, in a building where no one locks anything because locking implies you have something to protect and having something to protect implies vulnerability.

The journal entries are not ideological. They are descriptions of the garden. Detailed, specific, sensory. The color of the flowers. The sound of water that he knows is not there. The temperature of sun on soil that does not exist. The entries improve in quality over the nine months โ€” richer language, more precise imagery, stronger metaphorical structure. His capacity for novel association, which Ayari's research predicts should be declining, appears to be increasing โ€” but only in the direction of the hallucination. His brain is routing all remaining creative capacity toward the one thing the Protocol cannot optimize away.

His latest entry reads: "The garden is more real than the conference room. I am not sure this is a symptom."

His next quarterly performance review is scheduled for three weeks from now. His reviewer is one of the two remaining functional founders. The review template does not include a field for hallucination quality.
