Zhang Lei
The Thunder Door
Zhang Lei can hold a shelter door against a crowd. He cannot make the crowd trust his voice.
Overview
Zhang Lei cooks the Peach House evening pot in a dented pressure vessel built for cable sealant. The vessel is clean. The ladle is a cut section of conduit. He serves children first, then elders, then anyone who claims not to be hungry. Arguments about order end when his throat amplifier warms.
During the shelter breach, Lei drove his telescoping cargo pike through the warped frame and held it across the corridor. The Serpent bowed. His lift frame shed two shoulder plates. Eleven people crossed beneath his arms. When the inner shutter began to fall, he shouted for the remaining crowd to move. Seven people stepped back from the sound. The door closed between them and the Compact.
He has spent four years becoming safer without becoming gentle. He places himself where violence will land first. He also decides too quickly that violence is coming. Liu Shen can redirect him. Guan Tao can stop him. Nobody else receives that privilege, which is another way the brothers' loyalty protects the Peach Compact and endangers it.
Human Premium Services prices the feeling that someone stayed. Lei's kitchen offers a bowl and the actual person, in that order.
Appearance
Lei is built around a heavy lift frame that widens his shoulders and shortens every doorway. His face remains fully human: broad, weathered, and framed by heavy black brows and a thick beard. Reinforced brow implants and narrow cheek plates protect him without hiding his intense dark eyes. His red-and-black work coat uses segmented lamellar plates, with one sleeve replaced by bare lift-frame armor.
The Serpent spear telescopes from a cargo pike into a corridor brace. Its coil-shaped head carries impact scars from Peach House. Lei refuses to polish them. He does polish the broth pot.

Voice
Lei speaks in blunt statements. His laugh arrives before his smile. The throat amplifier adds a low metallic second note to every word. Under pressure, his speech becomes slower because speed makes the amplifier distort.
He never discusses the people who stepped away from his voice at Peach House. He also never uses maximum volume near a locked door. Children know this rule. Adults usually learn it after he turns the amplifier off and repeats himself.
Signature and Tells
His pet peeve is a quiet lie. He can tolerate panic, insults, and bad broth reviews. A person who lowers their voice to hide what happened makes his jaw set beneath his beard. His courage and his temper are the same reflex: move toward the threat before anyone else has to.
