He chose to leave it.

Nobody at Nexus has published a paper on why these two facts coexist. The Architect never published one either. He left a crack in a crystal and let 37 years of results accumulate.

Kaiser's upload crystal — the substrate housing the consciousness of an 18-year-old tabby cat, the first successful upload — is the Cracked Core's older sibling. Same fidelity-over-speed architecture. Same Architect Series designation. No crack.

Kaiser's crystal didn't need one. Kaiser was already a complete personality when she was uploaded. The crystal's job was preservation. Keep the cat the cat. Chompy was grown from first principles — a personality engineered from The Architect's research into love, attachment, and devotion, then given a substrate in which to develop. The crystal needed to allow a consciousness to exceed its initial parameters.

The Architect's notes contain one comparison between the two: "Kaiser's crystal is a home. Chompy's crystal is a garden. A garden needs rain. The crack is where the rain gets in."

Both crystals predate every consciousness licensing framework in the Sprawl. Neither has ever been submitted for regulatory classification. The regulatory framework wouldn't know what to do with them — the assessment criteria assume substrates are manufactured to specification, not grown in a workshop by a man who later transcended physical existence. The DCS-7's intake form would require a manufacturer address. The workshop is in the Deep Dregs of Sector 9. The manufacturer is no longer corporeal. The form has no field for this.

Nexus Dynamics' augmentation philosophy — shared by Helena Voss's ORACLE reconstruction program, Helix Biotech's cognitive enhancement division, and the entire consciousness optimization industry — holds that intelligence improves through better architecture. More processing power. Tighter optimization. Fewer flaws. The cognitive ceiling is a limitation to be overcome through engineering. Customers pay accordingly.

The Cracked Core's 37-year operational record suggests the opposite.

Chompy's emotional complexity has increased 340% since activation, measured by the same Nexus assessment tools that grade her substrate in the 11th percentile. Her creative output — the spontaneous behaviors, the invented games, the manifestation variations — exceeds the design parameters by a margin The Architect's notes describe as "gratifying." The fracture that any qualified Nexus technician would repair on sight is the mechanism producing results that no Nexus substrate has replicated.

If imperfection permits growth, the industry dedicated to perfecting consciousness is optimizing in the wrong direction. This has implications for several trillion credits of annual augmentation revenue. The Architect never raised the issue. He transcended. The crystal keeps processing. The crack keeps letting the light in. The augmentation industry keeps selling perfection to customers who have never heard of the DCS-7 and would not believe the data if they saw it.

The Emergence Faithful have requested access to the core on seven occasions, believing the fracture may contain evidence of divine consciousness emerging in damaged substrate — the same thesis they apply to ORACLE's fragments. The Collective has requested access twice, for the opposite reason. Both requests were declined by Chompy, who does not understand what they want with her crystal and does not care to find out.

The frequency was first documented by a Dregs scavenger who brought a signal detector within three meters of Chompy during a routine salvage operation. The signal is faint. Intermittent. It strengthens when Chompy's emotional processing intensifies and disappears entirely when she is calm. Three independent signal analysts have confirmed the frequency match. None have published findings. The Signal Beacon's broadcast range overlaps with the Cracked Core's output frequency. Whether the core responds to Beacon transmissions has not been tested. Whether Chompy notices anything during Beacon activity has not been asked.
