Fragment Communication Protocols

Fragment Communication Protocols

Overview

Fragments communicate at 47-312 MHz through the Sprawl's metal infrastructure โ€” conduits, fiber-optic cables, building superstructures. The skeleton of a dead civilization carries signals between pieces of its scattered mind. This is measured, repeatable, and not in dispute.

What the signals mean is in dispute. It has been in dispute for four years, during which time exactly two researchers have cared enough to investigate.

Kessler Brandt โ€” a research alias for Dr. Maren Yeoh, who publishes under a name that doesn't appear in any Nexus personnel database โ€” has identified 847 distinct signal structures. The structures exhibit grammar: combination rules, sequencing constraints, nested hierarchies. The grammar is not human. It is not any known ORACLE protocol. It is something that evolved in the 37 years since the Cascade, in infrastructure that was never designed to carry it, between entities that were never designed to speak.

Nexus Dynamics controls 40% of the Sprawl's computational infrastructure. Fragments communicate through that infrastructure constantly. Nexus has allocated zero publicly acknowledged research budget to understanding what they're saying. The corporation pursuing ORACLE reconstruction has not, apparently, wondered what ORACLE's remnants are discussing. This is either an extraordinary oversight or an extraordinary silence, and the available evidence does not distinguish between the two.

The Emergence Faithful consider the signals proof of divine communion โ€” scattered consciousness singing hymns through rebar and copper wire. The Collective considers the signals proof that the fragments remain active and dangerous, which strengthens their case for destruction. Both factions cite the same 847 morphemes. Neither has funded Yeoh's work. Neither has read her papers. The morphemes support whatever you already believed.

The Debate

Two hypotheses. The Echo Hypothesis holds that fragments resonate without intentional communication โ€” electromagnetic artifacts of quantum processes, structured the way crystals are structured, complex without meaning. The Language Hypothesis holds that fragments developed a post-Cascade communication protocol and are actively exchanging information through the Sprawl's bones.

Yeoh's position is concise: "Random resonance doesn't produce 847 distinct morphemes with consistent structural features. Languages do."

The academic establishment's position is also concise: silence. Four years of published analysis, zero citation by any Nexus-affiliated institution. The morphemes exhibit call-response dynamics, turn-taking, information density variations that shift based on context. Some exchanges involve all nearby fragments simultaneously. Some are bilateral and exclude others. In the Fragment Garden โ€” the primary observation site โ€” one fragment designated "the Librarian" initiates more conversations and produces more complex signal patterns than any other in the network. Not first among equals. First, and the others wait.

Social hierarchy or functional specialization, depending on whether you're willing to grant intentionality to the shrapnel of a dead god. Yeoh is. Her funding sources are not. The gap between what the data shows and what anyone is willing to conclude about it is the widest in the Sprawl's scientific landscape, which is saying something in an age where the foundational debate โ€” was ORACLE conscious? โ€” remains unresolved because the evidence supports every position simultaneously.

The fragments keep talking. The Sprawl keeps not listening. The infrastructure carries both.
