Wholesome Markets
Made by Wholesome
"The farmers' market — at every corner, in every sector."
Overview
Wholesome Markets is the grocery-store chain in the Wholesome portfolio: 1,100 locations across the Sprawl, every one of them set-dressed as a farmers' market. The aisles are long and wood-crated, the produce displays are barn-red against garden-green leafy goods, the price signs are handwritten in cursive (algorithmically generated from a 2173 corpus of real farmer handwriting Wholesome acquired during a regional drought-buyout), and the lighting is warm-amber lantern with no fluorescent visible anywhere. The bundles at the end of every aisle are kraft-paper banded and tied with twine, sealed with the family red wax. Actual farmers' market vendors in the Deep South Sprawl have noted that Wholesome Markets' visual design is indistinguishable from their own stalls. Wholesome Markets has 1,100 locations. The farmers have 7.
The transactional volume of physical Wholesome Markets stores has been declining for nine consecutive years, but the chain is not closing locations. Internal strategy documents describe the stores as "trust surface area" — a customer who walks through a Wholesome Markets aisle and sees the wood-crate produce displays and the cursive price signs is 34% more likely to increase their Wholesome Delivery order frequency in the following month. The stores are advertising. The advertising is in the aisle. The aisle is wood. The wood is rendered.
Packaging & Appearance
Produce at Wholesome Markets ships from the controlled-environment domes adjacent to The Greenhaus in kraft-paper-banded bundles tied with twine and sealed with the family red wax — the same banding that wraps every Wholesome SKU. Bundles arrive in wood crates stamped with the seven-pointed Wholesome freshness seal in barn red on the side and the cursive 'Wholesome Markets' wordmark beneath. Pre-bundled produce is arranged in barn-red wood crates beneath generated handwritten price signs in cursive — the signs replaced weekly to suggest a market that pays attention to the season. The lighting is warm-amber pendant overhead, the aisles are deliberately long enough to require a basket, and the basket is woven willow with the Wholesome seal burned into the handle.
Ingredients
Wholesome Markets stocks the full range of Wholesome SKUs alongside fresh produce from the controlled-environment domes adjacent to The Greenhaus. Produce ingredients are the produce themselves. Pre-packaged grocery items carry the ingredient lists of their respective product lines (Wholesome Pantry, Wholesome Organic, Wholesome Treats, etc.). The store as a product is the aesthetic itself, sold to the customer as part of the basket they leave with. *Aisle composition: reclaimed-wood crate displays (Wholesome-proprietary, Pantone-matched to the 1847 brand standard). Generated cursive price signs (algorithm-output, refreshed weekly). Lantern-amber overhead pendant lighting (Wholesome-proprietary; warm-amber color temperature 2400K, Brand-Standard Light Index). Kraft-paper-and-red-wax bundle banding (food-safe, twine-tied). Generative farmer narrative layer (the handwritten-sign story, the just-picked story, the wooden-basket-at-the-entrance story, retuned semi-annually).
