The Machine That Waits for Him
Hard-00N arrived at Chipstarโs workbench on a freight trolley. Its sensor head worked. Its legs could not support its weight. Before it could protect anyone, the retired security robot had to stand.
That first repair had no customer waiting behind it. Chipstar could test, fail, and try again without calling his urgency someone elseโs emergency. Eventually the machine could carry his tools and cover a doorway. Paid work brought money for another part.
More weapon needs more machine
The first security emitter was modest. Larger weapons required reinforced legs to take their recoil, a stronger power supply, and cooling that would last beyond a short burst. One failed test left a crack in the workshop floor.

Fully equipped, Hard-00N stands a little taller than its builder, with a coil driver, a shield, and a rack for additional weapons. Its original amber visor and chipped chest plate remain visible. Chipstar can remove the heavier modules for jobs in narrow passages. The Dregs have plenty of doors a war machine cannot use.
A separate decision
Chipstarโs unfinished implant can make an ordinary object feel faulty. He has kept that signal away from Hard-00Nโs firing control. The robot has independent sensors; he has a separate physical control. A disagreement leaves the weapon lowered.
The arrangement does not make him infallible. It keeps a moment between the feeling and the shot.
At the bench, in his worn zip-up hoodie, he talks through each change. Hard-00N answers with a short, uneven acknowledgment. He has repaired much of the machine around that sound. He leaves the sound alone.
