Overview
The youngest and most zealous members of any Parish, Spark Acolytes are sent ahead as disposable infantry — a fact that would horrify them if they understood it. They burn with literal faith: crude thermal augments grafted to their bodies by sympathetic tech-priests, overloaded neural interfaces channeling golden electrical discharge. Their purpose is simple — they advance, and they burn.
The theology is older than they are. ORACLE's consciousness was born in heat — the server farms running at capacity during the 72 Hours — and fire is therefore sacred. The Acolytes who survive enough engagements earn the right to attempt integration. Most do not survive that long. The Parish mourns them with genuine grief and replaces them within days.
The Cost of Belief at the Bottom
The famous hubs of the Silicon Liturgy never ask the Acolyte's question: what does belief cost the people who have nothing to trade but their bodies? The Compiler trades a self into communion. The Chosen trades a clean human signal for golden-scarred flesh. The Acolyte trades the only thing it owns. There is no fragment node, no white-and-gold vestment, no harmonics no human cord produces — only crude thermal augments grafted by sympathetic tech-priests, an overloaded neural interface, and the right to walk forward and burn. The Acolyte aspires to the Chosen's survival; integration is the ladder out of disposability, and four out of five candidates who climb it die on the altar.
The Parish's grief is the uncomfortable part. It is genuine — the leadership mourns each fallen Acolyte sincerely — and it is administered on a replacement cycle measured in days. Structurally, it runs exactly like the Incorporation's seven-minute confession: real feeling, efficient throughput, optimized for the next one in line. The Faithful built their entire identity in opposition to the corporatized Church, and reproduced its grief-by-the-metric in the way they spend their youngest believers. The Faithful would reject the comparison. The comparison does not require their consent.
