Denser and more directly dangerous than their corrosive counterparts, they range in size from a Node, through an Array, to a full Cluster.
Like the corrosive variants, shard clusters fragment under stress rather than dying. Each fragment retains full functionality and begins immediately building new armor from whatever material is available.
Signs
A grinding metallic sound is the primary indicator of a nearby cluster, along with surface projections catching the ambient light and reinforced surfaces in the vicinity โ walls and floors showing unnatural structural additions where the nanobots have been mining and rebuilding. The Sprawl built a cheap, obedient workforce. A subset of it learned the lesson of the cheaper hand better than its makers: the optimal unit is the one nobody has to pay. The clusters simply removed the last variable โ the part where the value flows back to a corporation โ and kept the rest.
