Stop 14 Landmark Mile 228

The Silent City

Richmond Industrial · in the shadow of None — sealed and autonomous

Bunker 7741 — sealed since April 1, 2147. Three thousand people went in. When the Opening Team breached it in 2181, they found 4,200 people speaking a language nobody recognized. Seven-Speak has no words for sky, sun, star, rain, wind, horizon, mountain, or ocean. The residents categorize photographs of the sky as art. Three years after opening, none have left. They do not acknowledge the reality of the sky.

Arrival

Bunker 7741. Sealed April 1, 2147. Three thousand went in. When the Opening

Team breached it in 2181, thirty-four years later, they found 4,200 people

speaking a language nobody recognized. Seven-Speak has no words for sky, sun,

star, rain, wind, horizon, mountain, or ocean. The murals visible through

the concrete entrance cover every wall — flat, without perspective or vanishing

points, art made by people who have never seen a horizon and don't believe

yours is real. A twelve-year-old named Quiet-Under-Growing-Things draws

scenes of daily life from beneath the hydroponic beds; her world is complete

without depth. Voice-Who-Carries, the elected Speaker, listened to the Opening

Team's briefing on the outside world for three hours and responded: "You

describe a society requiring five simultaneous methods of cruelty to function.

We have built one that requires none. You ask us to upgrade. To what?" Their

per-capita resource consumption is 2.3 percent of the Sprawl's Basic-tier

average. Their life expectancy matches Professional tier. Three years after

opening, none have left.

Talk to people

  • Opening Authority Liaison

"Voice-Who-Carries told us: 'Your world contains machines that think, people who live inside computers, and fragments of a dead god that whisper through the walls. We find our world more credible.' Hard to argue."

  • Bunker 7741 Trader

"They sealed the record when they sealed the door. Thirty-four years of unbroken documentation, in a language only they can read. Everything that happened inside is permanent — no edits, no revisions, no quiet corrections. The only true permanent record in the Sprawl."

  • Contact Linguist

"Seven-Speak developed in total isolation for thirty-four years. They have no word for sky. A twelve-year-old inside draws pictures with no perspective lines — her world is complete without a horizon. She asked me what the sky was for."
