Iron gall ink made from desert-plant tannins and ferrous sulfate, mixed in

the same wooden barrels Marina Orosco's generation used. Cotton rag paper

processed in Greenward's textile mills and dried in the desert wind. Lead

type — thousands of individual metal letters — sorted into wooden cases,

arranged by hand, locked into chases. The press thud-thud-thuds in the back

room while Olu Adeyemi, the master typesetter, hums melodies from pre-Cascade

vinyl that Orin Slade plays on his turntable next door. Slade writes at a

desk by the window, fountain pen on paper, his "Slade's Ear" column reaching

2,000 readers in Zephyria and an unknown number through smuggled copies. The

Record's woodcut illustrations are carved by Tomas, who has never seen a

photograph — his renderings of the Sprawl look like fever dreams, all angles

and bleeding neon, a city imagined from descriptions. Once the ink is on the

paper, the text is fixed. No updates, no corrections, no quiet corporate

edits to inconvenient truths. Can't hack paper. Can't delete it. Can't

pretend you didn't say it.
