The Half-Life Cart

Overview
The Half-Life Cart serves ramen on a fixed night circuit through the Deep Dregs. It has no seats and no Grid connection. Two miniature fission reactors sit inside ceramic-and-boron sleeves beneath its broth wells, where their steady waste heat holds chicken stock and mushroom stock at 82ยฐC for an entire shift.
The reactors are salvaged orbital nursery cores. They once kept infant shelters warm during station power loss. Toma Rhee bought them after a breaker yard cut away their serial plates, then built a ramen cart around the one thing they still did reliably: make heat. He cooks each day's stock on a communal electric range before the evening power auction. The cores keep it hot after he rolls away.
Toma stops where late crews already cross: lift cages, pump stations, and the dry ledges above the flood lanes. Four people can stand beneath the folding hood. A fifth customer means the cart moves on, because a crowd can block the only raised path when runoff enters the bay floor.
The sign on the hood reads HOT FOOD. SHORT HALF-LIFE. The reactors are expected to outlive the sign by six centuries.
The Warm Hold
Every bowl leaves with a yellow radiation indicator strip clipped to its rim. Toma checks the strip when he takes payment and again when the bowl comes back. If either edge darkens past its printed line, he dumps both wells, folds the hood, and pushes the cart to a shield mechanic. This has happened once. The broth was safe; a cracked sleeve was not.
The ritual makes a dangerous machine legible. Customers do not need to know reactor design. They need to see yellow stay yellow. Regulars turn returned strips into ties for cable bundles, so a repair bench in the Dregs can look radioactive long after the readings are gone.
Grid heat costs more than the noodles. The unlicensed cores are the reason Toma can charge ยข6 for a bowl through blackouts and power auctions. Corporate districts classify the cart as a mobile reactor installation and a food-service violation. Neither classification has found an inspector willing to follow it below the Rim.

Conditions Report
Steam gathers under the rain hood and beads on soot-black steel. Broth amber rises from the wells while cold cyan service lights catch the warning bands around each reactor collar. The cart smells of ginger, hot metal, mushroom stock, and the mineral damp of the drained Bay floor. Its wheels click once per revolution where a ceramic shield tile has been replaced with a thicker salvage cut.
Toma remembers who takes extra salt and who cannot eat vat protein. He does not sell conversation, promise comfort, or ask customers to stay. The service is a hot bowl handed over by a person who noticed which bowl to make. In the Deep Dregs, that part remains free.
