The Provocation

When the Sprawl finally granted synthetic minds personhood, it could only offer the personhood it already had — sized for a human, one body, one name, one grave. So the well-meaning Recognition Front won rights for distributed minds on one condition: that they come into focus, instancing into a single licensed body and surrendering their plurality. The Instancing Act is the result — liberation as amputation, performed by people who genuinely believe they are saving someone, who cannot hear the freed grieve the selves they had to stop being to qualify as someone we would protect.
