The Undervolt

Bay floor deep level, Sector 9 ยท in the shadow of Lamplighter-maintained neutral ground

An underground settlement beneath the Sprawl's power distribution layer. 2,000 permanent residents, 5,000 transient. The Lamplighters maintain it as neutral infrastructure. The Mirror Market trades in data and supplies. EM interference disrupts all surveillance โ€” augmented systems go dark here. The constant 28ยฐC warmth and Grid hum make it feel like the inside of a living machine.

Arrival

You descend through a maintenance shaft and the temperature rises to a

constant 28 degrees Celsius โ€” waste heat from the Grid's power conduits,

cables thick as tree trunks arcing through corridors that were never meant

for habitation. The hum hits your chest before your ears register it: 16

to 23 hertz, the structural vibration of the Sprawl's entire power

distribution backbone, felt in the jaw and the sternum. The Lamplighters

have lived here for thirty years, maintaining ORACLE-era infrastructure

with skills no corporate diagnostic can replicate. Old Jin's workshop

sits on the eastern edge โ€” a converted transformer monitoring room with

three shelves of physical books and a pot of tea that is always,

improbably, hot. The Mirror Market sprawls across The Crossroads, a

junction of six cable runs converted into the closest thing to a public

square this deep. Children born in the Undervolt can feel a junction

operating normally from one that's failing, navigating in total darkness

by electromagnetic signature alone. Your crawler's nav array goes dead.

The EM interference that hides this place from corporations hides it

from you too.

Talk to people

  • Mirror Market Vendor

"Everything here runs on trust. The Lamplighters guarantee the weights and measures. Cheat someone and you'll never find this place again โ€” they'll reroute the maintenance shafts."

  • Grid Technician

"The warmth you feel is the Grid โ€” the Sprawl's entire power distribution backbone runs through these conduits. We live between the wires. The corps know we're here. They just can't see us."

  • Undervolt Regular

"Your augments don't work down here. That's the price of privacy. Most runners panic the first time their interface goes dark. The ones who come back learn to appreciate the silence."
