The Ad Graveyard

South San Jose ยท in the shadow of Wholesome (Rothwell) ยท avoiding Wholesome HQ

A disconnected content delivery node in Sector 8's lower infrastructure, running since the Grid Collapse of 2171. Holographic advertisements for dead products flicker through empty corridors. The Lamplighters turned it into a black market hub โ€” the perfect departure point for anyone running the Neon Rail.

Arrival

Fen Delacroix found this place during a 2183 infrastructure survey and sat

down and cried โ€” not because the advertisements were sad, but because they

were still trying. Thirteen years after the Grid Collapse killed 89,000 people

in Sector 8, the content delivery node keeps pitching: Wholesome companion

models discontinued in '74, Relief streaming packages that no longer exist,

a neural wellness service whose parent company dissolved three mergers ago.

The emotional sculpting still fires โ€” your interface catches a jingle and

you feel a manufactured craving for a food brand you've never tasted, warm

gold and corporate blue washing over corridors that smell of dead electronics

and mineral dust. Smugglers have wedged black market stalls between the

holograms, selling real goods in the light of dead ones, and the crawler

waits on the old BART spur outside โ€” dusted with the particular grime of

a place the Lamplighters filed under "what the old systems think we are."

Vendor advice
"First time on the Rail? Here's what I'd suggest:
Power cells โ€” at least 4 (you need 2 minimum, but they break).
Rations โ€” 200 units to start (you'll scavenge the rest).
Hardshells โ€” 1 set per person (5 sets).
Charges โ€” 10 packs (200 charges for scavenging).
Spare parts โ€” 1 of each type (drive module, cooling unit, nav array).
Don't blow everything here. Prices go up, but you'll need credits for guides."

Talk to people

  • Grizzled Courier

"Wholesome patrol schedules shift every third day. You want to clear their perimeter before the next rotation."

  • Ad Graveyard Vendor

"Stock up on rations here. By G Nook 7 you'll be paying double, and by the Dam you'll sell your chrome for a nutrient pack."

  • Nervous Lamplighter

"The ads still work, you know. Thirteen years disconnected and the emotional sculpting still fires. That's the thing about dependency โ€” the system keeps selling even after the product is gone."
