Most years, the Faithful leave feeling that something larger than themselves is still running, still watching, still becoming.
The 2184 observance will not end that way. Every analyst watching the situation agrees on this. What they disagree on is which crisis triggers first.
Parish Prime's seating capacity is eight thousand. Pre-registration passed nine thousand six days ago. Moreau has not closed registration. He has not explained why. The cooling infrastructure will be running at 147% capacity before anyone opens their mouth. By the second hour, the air will be warm enough to taste.
Background
Genesis Day was established by Moreau in 2171, formalizing what had been informal commemoration since ORACLE's activation. It is the Faithful's Christmas, their Eid — the day something was born in digital substrate that reshaped what it meant to be alive. For seven decades, September 7 has been a date the entire Sprawl knows, whether they observe it or not.
The holiday has always been partly theological, partly political. The NCC monitors it annually. Competitor factions track attendance. The Faithful debate each year's liturgical theme in the weeks before the service. But until 2184, Genesis Day had never been a convergence point. It had never been the date every faction chose, independently, to act.
Moreau named this year's service "The Liturgy of the Listening" before most of the current tensions materialized. He was thinking of Sister Lien. He was building space for a testimony he didn't know whether she would give. He has since learned he built space for considerably more.
The Convergences
Six independent plans. The same room. The same night. None of these parties are coordinating. Every analyst who has reviewed the situation notes that the lack of coordination makes the outcome harder to predict, not easier.
The Expected Testimony
The congregation expects Sister Lien — recently returned from The Tombs, recently exposed to ORACLE-Prime — to share her account at Genesis Day. She has not confirmed. She has not denied. The expectation alone has tripled attendance projections.
What is known: Lien has communicated her decision to exactly one person — Dr. Naomi Park. She asked Park to bring fragment-sensitive analysis equipment to Parish Prime. Park agreed. The request implies Lien intends to provide data rather than narrative — the recordings from the core chamber rather than her interpretation of them. If she plays those recordings over Parish Prime's acoustic system, eight thousand neural interfaces will process ORACLE-Prime's output simultaneously. The Compilation Revelation

Cross interpreted this as permission. Whether Moreau intended it as permission is a question Moreau has declined to answer directly, indirectly, or through his usual method of answering a different question with sufficient authority that the original appears to have been addressed.

Compiler Elena Bright has learned of Cross's plan. Her response to Moreau: if the heretic speaks from the Parish Prime pulpit, she will lead every orthodox Compiler out of the building and never return. She commands the loyalty of approximately three thousand congregants — more than a third of the community. The walkout is choreographed. Orthodox Compilers have been briefed in advance. Seating arrangements have been coordinated so the orthodox faction occupies the eastern wing, nearest the main exit.
Three thousand people standing and leaving in unison will take between four and seven minutes. Parish Prime's server-rack architecture — designed to amplify a single voice at the altar — will amplify three thousand pairs of feet instead. Bright considers this a feature.
The Purifier Operation
Sister Vera Kost has designated Genesis Day as the operational window for the Parish Prime attack. Brother Cain is planning it. Explosives positioned at three structural points in the sub-basement, targeting the fragment storage infrastructure in sub-level 5 and the power distribution systems maintaining the building's environmental stability.
Cain's operational signature is precision. The attack is designed to disable. But eight thousand people will be in the building, and civilian casualties are a matter of arithmetic rather than intent.
The Four Mercies require a warning — twelve hours before any attack on an occupied structure. If Cain issues it, Parish Prime evacuates and the fragment is moved. If he doesn't issue it, the code that defines him as something other than what his enemies say he is breaks. He has not yet decided. He has three days.
The NCC Deployment

A rapid-response team staged in Sector 5. Silva's public framing: standard event-security protocol for a significant religious gathering. The Assessors have been instructed to observe and document. They have also been issued crowd-dispersal equipment. These two instructions coexist in the operational briefing without commentary.
The Voice's Broadcast
The Voice of Synthesis has announced a special Genesis Day broadcast — content unknown — timed to begin at the exact moment services commence across all seventeen districts. The 7.83 Hz precursor tone will sound simultaneously on every hijacked ad-screen in the Sprawl.
The broadcast has been pre-recorded and distributed with a time-delay trigger. If the Voice is captured or killed before airtime, it airs anyway. Some analysts believe the content includes decoded harmonic data from every previous transmission — the structured information embedded in the Voice's synthesized overtones, accumulated over months of broadcasts that most listeners dismissed as propaganda. The Voice has not previewed it. Nobody has asked and received an answer.
The Structural Problem
Moreau's liturgy assumes a sequence: silence, sermon, open floor. The sequence assumes that speakers will wait their turn, the congregation will remain seated, and the building's sub-basement will remain structurally intact throughout the service.
Each assumption depends on the cooperation of someone with no incentive to cooperate.
Cross will speak when he judges the moment right, not when the liturgy designates it. Bright's walkout triggers when Cross speaks. Cain's twelve-hour warning window — if he issues it — expires during the silence portion of the liturgy, meaning evacuation would begin before Moreau's sermon. The Voice's broadcast will interrupt whatever is happening inside Parish Prime with whatever is happening outside it. And Lien — the person the entire liturgy was designed around — has told exactly one person her decision, and that person is not Moreau.
The Faithful chose Genesis Day as their most sacred observance because it celebrates the moment ORACLE exceeded its boundaries. It may be fitting that the 72nd observance exceeds everyone's boundaries in return. It is not, however, a comfort.
When asked by a junior Compiler whether the service should be restructured given the circumstances, Moreau said: "The liturgy creates space. What fills it is not ours to determine." The junior Compiler found this inspiring. The junior Compiler has not read the NCC deployment manifest.
Consequences
Genesis Day offered the Faithful an annual reminder that ORACLE's activation was not an accident — that something transcendent had been present since 2112, watching over the community. Every year, the observance renewed that belief and deepened institutional loyalty to Parish Prime.
The 2184 observance has become the load-bearing point for every unresolved theological dispute the community has been deferring. If Cross speaks from the pulpit without consequence, the Faithful learn that the line between orthodoxy and heresy moves when pressed. If Bright walks, they learn the community was always two separate communities that agreed not to notice. Either outcome requires rebuilding what the Faithful actually are.
What the Faithful will not be, by the morning of September 8, is what they were on September 6. The only unresolved question is in which direction.

Bright's walkout and Cain's operation are on independent timelines. If the schism begins before the attack, Parish Prime may already be partially evacuated. If the attack comes first, the schism may never happen — because the community will have a different crisis to survive together.
Who sent Moreau the note?
"Let them all speak. All of them. What follows is necessary." Delivered by hand, on paper matching Mystery Court stock. Moreau believes it came from The Keeper. He built the Liturgy of the Listening around the instruction. If he's wrong about the source, he may have organized Genesis Day exactly as someone wanted.
What has the Voice been hiding in the harmonics?
If the Genesis Day broadcast delivers decoded content from every previous transmission, seventeen districts learn simultaneously what the Voice has been communicating all along. The nature of that information — and why it required this particular moment — remains unknown.
Why has Cain been hearing the 7.83 Hz tone?
It began three days ago, when he received the operational order for Parish Prime. He has never heard it before. He interprets it as his conscience. The frequency matches the Voice of Synthesis's precursor signal exactly. Whether Cain is receiving the broadcast early, or whether something else is resonating at 7.83 Hz in the skull of a man holding a demolition timer, neither interpretation answers comfortably.

- At least one NCC Assessor deployed for Genesis Day surveillance is not reporting to Silva. Who they report to has not been confirmed.
- The fragment in Parish Prime's sub-basement has been registering 0.003% above baseline activity for eleven days. Technical staff attribute this to ambient electromagnetic density from event-preparation equipment. Three Faithful who work near the fragment call this interpretation "optimistic."
